I haven't posted many cup reviews since last Summer when my world changed. However, this afternoon a package arrived on my doorstep, and it contained some of the most beautiful cups I have ever held in my hot, grubby little forepaws.
I'm referring to twelve cups (or sets of cups) that arrived from RnT II. I ordered these with bags only, no balls, because I'll want to spend a bit of extra time selecting the balls that I feel will set off the cups the best.
The cups in question include the following:
Paul Fox standard cup set
Paul Fox mini cup set
Paul Fox mini combo cup set
Monti Mini combo cup set
Ken Brooke master chop cup
Ken Brooke junior chop cup
Don Alan mini chop cup
Don Alan petite chop cup
Alter Ego chop cup (plain rim)
Alter Ego chop cup (beaded rim)
Workers chop cup
Bells of St. Mary's set
That's 12 units total, consisting of six sets and six chop cups, for a total of 24 cups all together. That's a LOT of gold plating.
All of these cups are copper, with the exception of the Bells of St. Mary's, which are steel.
The plating on these cups is, without exception, some of the best gold plating I have ever seen. I have owned gold plated musical instruments. I've sent instrument parts to various platers to have them replated, and I have seen the best and the worst. So I do have ways to compare the quality of the plating.
First of all, the plating is even. There are no burn marks on the cups, ANYWHERE!!! There is no filling of the groove where the bead contacts the outer part of the cup. This is work that is done correctly and with great skill.
The plating, itself, should not effect the way the cups act when you perform, even the chop cups. I did some preliminary tests with the large Ken Brooke cup, and it worked fine.
The cups do not appear to be coated in any way. However, cups of this type are generally not for use in "combat" situations. If I were going to perform with these in real life, I would probably wear gloves, just to emphasize the beauty of the cups and the fact that they are really special. I realize this goes against all the standard teachings about the cups and balls, but it could be a departure point for some special patter.
Also, the gloves could be used to your advantage.
I don't know how Donnie does it for the price, considering the volatility of the gold market. But the prices are reasonable.
Highly recommended for the cup connoisseur.
I can't wait for the next items in the series!!!!!
Thanks for making such nice toys, Donnie!

Wow Bill, that's a lot of gold! I know that you know your stuff when it comes to plating due to your other interests so it's great to hear that. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the great review Bill!
I do love electroplating gold. Every cup looks and feels like a trophy, it's very satisfying work.
Learn the form, but seek the formless. Learn it all, then forget it all. Learn the way, then find your own way.

Donnie:
I have several banjos with gold-plated parts. I've had parts re-plated by people who didn't know how to prepare surfaces properly. There is little that is as disappointing than watching a layer of gold plate start peeling off a piece of metal.
I know what to look for.
And I call them like I see them.
I guarantee all of you that if there was ANYTHING wrong with these cups, I would have called Donnie and let him know.
I would say this is "sterling" work, but that's silver, not gold!

I think of you often wondering how you have been holding up Bill. It is really great to see such an enthusiastic review.
