I have both volumes. Personally, I find many of the applications in these to be very brief and/or outdated. Not much call anymore for using cigarette tricks in a Gospel magic show, as just one outdated example. Many of the applications just site a few Bible verses and do not make much sense.
Personally, if you do not have much "application" materials and are looking for more, it is better to purchase any Gospel magic routine books, lecture notes or DVD materials by Duane Laflin or Barry Mitchell- much more current and useful. That's just my opinion. Sheldon Rhodes has many good routine and lecture items posted on his www.jestkidding.com site. Many good routine posted in the members only library section of www.fcm.org
I once in awhile refer back to my two "spiritual application" books from Tarbell for fresh ideas- but cannot honestly remember finding one that I still use today. It is just fun for me sometimes to scan through these old volumes and see contributor names I recognize (like Del Wilson).
I believe Mark Tripp said a couple of years ago he working on a volume of spiritual applications for the Mark Wilson course in magic- but I don't believe he finished it yet (or at least I am not aware of that being out yet). I use Duane Laflin's routines all the time, see our posted programs at www.ChristianMagician.org which are loaded with many of his original ideas. I also posted earlier on The Magic Café' our complete "Index for www.ChristianMagician.org"- which will be updated soon to add the content of our new one hour "Conjuring and Chalk" program should be posted anytime now.

I would agree with Roger. I also have both volumes and have not found any material that is of use to me. I also agree that better material is avialable from the sources he mentioned and perhaps from Steve Varro at Doc Haley Magic or David Ginn Magic. Others may of course disagree however.

I know it's easy to dismiss these volumes as being outdated, and I think that's true to a large degree. But I do feel they can be a jump off point for developing your own contemporary routines. My biggest complaint is that a lot contained in the early gospel magic publications such as these is based on the "turn or burn" theology, which goes against my Calvinist views. That aside, I can usually find one inspiring thought when used as a reference.
Jamie, I had thought several years ago that continuing the application series would be a terrific idea. Thanks for letting me know about the third volume. Would appreciate any additional information you might want to share on this, either here, a new thread or PM.

I am an avid book buyer, but was very disappointed in the Spiritual Applications for Tarbell.
The Tarbell series itself is a fantastic resource, but as others said, there are better sources, than the 2 volume set of SPAFT, for Gospel magic. Laflin's material is well thought out, and Del Wilson has some booklets that may be helpful. Also, I have found some very good ideas given out on the Café itself.

I forgot to mention that Dr. Faria actually wrote a Spiritual Applications Vol. 2 unknowingly and simultaneously as Miller - although His verison is no longer in print, it's quite good and I would recommend that you contact him about getting a PDF version on a CD magiclaffs@gmail.com and of course go to the link above to get Vol. 3.
I'd just like to mention that my friend, Dr. Chris Faria is working on his version of Spiritual Applications vol. 4... Due out later this year.
Be blessed!

Nice! Any chance you could post maybe 1 lesson/trick as an representative example to see what it looks like? Maybe you have a link to that already you can share here- would love to take a look at it. Thanks.

A while ago, I wrote up a booklet using Magic For Dummies as the basis. Have used it in lectures before, and find that the effects in that book were easily adapted to Gospel effects. Now, I am also much lower key in my gospel presentation and do more storytelling, ala Robert Neale, but the stories, either long or short, worked for me.
