Seeing that we are going to get into the semantics of it, exposure will happen if the effect is sold. This is what Teller wants to prevent. I was going to put in the subject line "Mentalist Karma?" - but, I didn't think the subject line was all that important. I happen to think that there are broader issues to think about.

Tony,
I can't specifically speak to what that incident was, and I understand that some people take a hard line on everything that smacks of exposure. Some believe that all exposure of method is bad, that it is unethical and harmful. My personal stance is that exposure in and of itself has very little, if any, effect on magic. I wouldn't be surprised if that very sleight Penn & Teller exposed has been used effectively by thousands of magicians immediately after and ever since that TV program aired.

With Penn & Teller, the exposure is often a pseudo exposure and/or done in a larger context that transcends the exposure. Their cups and balls routine shows what a great trick it is even when done with clear cups and the method they exposed in their sawing a woman routine was immediately used by them to fool the audience with the trick.

I'm not sure why this was posted in this forum, except that there are some here who dislike Penn & Teller's views on psychics, paranormal beliefs and their support and friendship with James Randi.

Actually, Todd, I don't have a problem with any of that. What I DO have a problem with is when they went on national TV, did a card trick that uses a certain slight and exposed the method and taught the slight on national TV.I don't want to get into what it was on a public forum, but is something that card guys use frequently. Billy-one, is that enough exposure for you or do you want more? By the way, I saw the show myself. No one told me about it.
