I can't claim credit for this thread title. It was suggested in another thread which has been "etherized". And I can't give credit to the one who made the suggestion because I don't remember who it was. But I thought it was a good idea: A thread where any subject can rise and ebb, mix and mingle, slither and slather, and points may be givethen and takethen away.
So on that, today I'm wondering: What draws people to watch, listen, read, and sometimes participate in negative displays of behavior?
I know people who watch those "judge shows" on TV several times every day. They get wrapped up in the hostility of the goings on, and allow it to set their own selves to be in a bad mood. Yet they keep on watching.
I myself sometimes feel compelled to read a local message board where the members are very hostile and nearly all of the posts turn into fighting, threats, racial hostility, etc. I purposely did not become a member so I can't respond. I'm sure some on here wish I would have made that decision here. That board does have useful information: lost animals (and I've participated in searches), fire info, traffic, etc. But sometimes I feel compelled to read the political diatribes and I can't put my finger on why. That board is very much a White-Euro-Christian board and the racial hatred and religious intolerance makes anything we've done here look like a love-in. Right now there onto Amish. They want them persecuted for not paying taxes (Amish DO pay taxes), relying on welfare (Amish do accept some social programs, but not S.S. or welfare - at least not "our" Amish), driving buggies on public roads, and stealing from their neighbors. I ain't even going to comment on those last two.
I admit that I have jumped into a few frays here, and I'm not sure why, but I wonder: Why do people purposely do things that they know will put them in bad moods and/or ruin their day?
What say you all?

Sometimes some folks say such outrageous things that I'm compelled to say something. And it's always fruitless because no one ever wins these things, though some [i]think[i] they do. It seems to be more of like a "Gotcha" mentality. Now, for the most part,I avoid the threads that I think will make me angry. I'm here to have fun, not debate why life is like an oyster.

There's an old story about Sam the Clam who ran a popular disco club and always had different local musical guest on Wednesday and Friday nights. Not just rock bands but anyone who could play an instrument with a uniqe twist. One Friday night he hired a harpist to com in and play an electric harp and she was a great singer as well. Her act was called "Don't Harp on Me!" Her name was Harriet.
Everyone had a rip roaring time because this gal was sexy in her tight blue jeans and t-shirt hip; she played cool electric harp stuff and could belt out a tune. Sam had an eye for talent.
Harriet also wasn't shy about mingling the crowd between sets and could handle her drink as well, accepting numerous offers to buy her a drink. It only made her sing and play better the next set.
Finally though, after her show, she stayed around to mingle some more with the crowd, and continued drinking until she became quite drunk.
Fearing she could not drive herself home or that someone might take advantage of her decreased capacity for cognitive thought, Sam had his partner Dave drive Harriet home. Dave left her harp behind because Dave didn't want the responsibility for damage to the expensive instrument. Sam locked her equipment in his office.
Home safely in bed, getting a good night's sleep she awoke late the next morning, remembering little of what happened after her show, and suddenly she realised her harp was missing. Thinking a little more, clearing the cob webs, she exclaimed......

There may be two things going on here.
First is the observer who gets a kick of watching folks slug it out with each other as a spectator sport. Think boxing and wrestling and other contact sports.
The second is the folks who participate in the "sport."
OP refers to both, I believe, as being negative, when perhaps, spectators might merely enjoy the action?

I think you may be on to something there Bob1Dog. I see it as a negative thing for me, even though I feel compelled to watch it sometimes. I usually come away thinking that it was a waste of time and I don't feel any better for spending that time. Strange, eh?

The truth is often nasty. Most people or rather the sheeple would prefer to be told what is called a NOBLE LIE. In fact they kill people who tell the truth. Do recall that fellow in the cave?

I think it is an aspect of the lower nature in humans to engage in backbiting. Watching these shows is a mechanism by which people can engage themselves in other peoples lives.
Some people who engage in backbiting are so mentally consumed with other peoples lives, they often forget that their own lives are worth living, so they may not achieve much in life. There's also a difference between watching these shows on the odd random "chilling out" or "zoning out" occasion, compared to those that put time aside to watch these shows.
"O SON OF SPIRIT! I created thee rich, why dost thou bring thyself down to poverty? Noble I made thee, wherewith dost thou abase thyself? Out of the essence of knowledge I gave thee being, why seekest thou enlightenment from anyone beside Me? Out of the clay of love I molded thee, how dost thou busy thyself with another? Turn thy sight unto thyself, that thou mayest find Me standing within thee, mighty, powerful and self-subsisting."
Kam
If I speak forth, many a mind will shatter,
And if I write, many a pen will break.
.....and when I consider my own self, lo, I find it coarser than clay!

I don't think it's strange at all. Hey, if you enjoy the game, you watch it. Some folks watch NHL games eager for the fights that may occur, as well as their team. It's blood sport. Same as with seeing someone get eaten alive on here if they say something outrageously, well, idiotic, at least in our opinion. We watch, and we decide to jump in, or not. Either way it's still as enjoyable, even though I've been chewed up and spit out by folks who know more than I do. Still, I play the game.

As for the OP, I can't say that I ever do it on purpose. I might have used to but I can't remember for sure. I usually go in looking for something positive or interesting and try to let it slide when something dumb or that's obvious bait comes up. But sometimes I just can't help responding to some of those things. I have made a pledge to never say anything negative on the YouTube since I created my new account, and I've stuck to it. Been a whole 15 minutes!

You ever see that word in a dictionary's print? They just blended together. It was only when I found the word in my Webster's International, Third Edition, that I googled it (after I posted) and saw the second z! Wikipedia saves us all, even if it's too late.
