Magic folks,

I purchased Shryock's Ring in Walnut DVD. I like the effect and the DVD is done well, but it does require a fair amount of preparation time and some supplies to be able to do the effect. Recently, I stumbled on descriptions of Viking's Can of Corn (as well as Can-it, Can of Pringles, Can of Nuts). The descriptions of Viking's Can of Corn by users of it show that those who have it seem to like it. My question to those who know both Shryock's effect and the Can of Corn: Would the can trick offer anything over the ring in walnut for the reappearnce of a finger ring in terms of preparation, ease of handling, or overall nature of the effects? Do you see any advantage in a performer owning both? I'm strongly tempted to make the plunge and get Can of Corn based on descriptions by Café members of their experiences with it, but my magic room is filling up with stuff so I don't want too many duplicates. Any information/advice will be much appreciated.

Magical things,
Zipper

Here's something to think about. You borrow a spectators ring and vanish it. You then have it reappear in a can of corn. You now hand back the ring all wet. Not sure if the spectator would appreciate that. Besides, the ring, due to it's size would get visually lost in the corn. Whereas the walnut shell is dry and the ring stands out.

I have both effects and I used a wristwatch. I placed it in a ziplock baggie for protection of what is about to happen to the watch. When it is produced in the can of corn, the baggie keeps the watch dry and makes sense for the bag to boot. The packet is large and very visible in the mound of corn.

Anyway, that's my thougths.

I see no advantage to owning a lot of the same trick. This is personal choice, there is so much magic today on the market, there is no need to keep buying the same effect over and over.

Yes, they are the same trick, just different places the item is discovered in.

You spoke about preparation, the Can O' Corn is just as much trouble to prepare and carry to a show.

You only need a different trick, if you do a lot of repeat shows. In that case, why not buy a good, Bill in whatever, then a Watch in whatever, then a Coin in whatever. Now you have purchased a different trick all together, and still kept the theme of your act going in the direction you originally intended.

Just my opinion.
