It only took me a moment but mostly because I was looking for a clever answer. If some one just introduced this to me as a game I think I would have fallen for it.
I'm not sure why a magician would have any advantage on this particular puzzle.

This principle, with a little more work, is the basis of Stewart James' Miraskill.
If you're not familiar with it, do yourself a favor and look it up. If you have Scarne on Card Tricks, it's in there.
