I tended bar for a while. But most often I book a place and besides performing at the tables - at some places I like to perform behind the bar. If it is OK with the venue that is.
Behind the bar I like to do the cards under the drink or ash tray. I also like doing the stack of quarters (halves) and besides doing some of the magic I do at tables like the shells and the cups and balls I tend to do more card magic.
I use the cards or card under the drink as a running gag.
Any bar magicians out there - what is your magic set?
Just a few thoughts and opinion.

I am one of the few lucky ones that is a professional bartender BUT also gets paid as house magician a few shifts a week. I usually run with 4 - 5, 30mins sets when I am paid to perform behind the bar. This enables me to still put money in the register, make and serve drinks/beers and other "stuff". 3 of the sets are card heavy. I use multiple selections and finds, ACR followed by CTC, Invisible Deck, just whatever I am in the mood for and that plays big/wide. Card under drink is HUGE and always plays well. I do a Non-Card set with a borrowed pint glass and dollar, One cup routine (w/o a PK ring) usually in with Sponge Bunnies, Coin Routine(s) [done with bottle caps] and Nuts N Bolts. I also have a rope set, prof.nightmare's, cut & restored, etc... This isn't the specific or exact order of things either.
Since I am behind the bar, I can have the sets packed individually. I do not have to keep everything on my as I have time in between to "reset" and get ready. I also have built in shelving and such that enables me to do more parlor style effects which rely on some larger props that wouldn't fit in your pocket (think Scotty York 'Jumbo Split Deck with saw, etc...).
On nights when I am just bartending, I always have a deck and a marker along with some packet tricks at either end of the bar. As long as I can squeeze them in, I still perform. Another thing that I have gotten "known for" when not performing magic is the Airborn Cocktail Shaker or floating cocktail shaker. I actually use this in bartending when pouring martinis or a large order of shots.
Cheers,
Justin

I used to do stuff behind the bar at many places. I still think one of the coolest bar tricks is the coin through the sheet of rubber. Also Heba Habba Al used to do the sugar cube trick at the new York lounge. A spectator would write a small mark (their initials) on a sugar cube with a pencil and drop it into a glass of water. They would cover the mouth of the glass with their hand and the mark on the cube would appear on their had - and the way Hebba did it - the mark appeared several places on their hand and wrist.
It was a cool thing to see and he got a lot out of this simple trick.

I used to perform behind the bar at TGIFriday's. I'd occasionally get asked for a drink.
I don't remember seeing Heba doing that sugar cube thing on that one VHS tape.
