I was just wondering what Mentalism if any you use while table-hopping. I currently use a thought transmitter, and B-wave, but was wondering what others use out their.

I recently saw Oz Pearlman's lecture through Penguin Magic, and he has some fantastic strolling mentalism routines on there. I highly recommend checking it out, it was a fantastic lecture.

Mother of All Book Tests, seriously!

I once did an entire party with ProMystic's MD in a leather dice-cup and MOABT with a dummy dustjacket. The MD allowed me to open with a quick "synchronizing" set of mindreading stunts, culminating in the divination of a single word selected from the book.

The whole routine runs about 8 minutes and bears repetition from table to table without losing any "punch." And there's no reset. And my handling of MOABT requires no writing by me or the spectator. Plays great!

sacrilegiously yours,

MD is a staple of walk around for me also now and the rest tends to depend on who's at the table. I have a family-friendly set utilizing a set of animal cards I made that includes a triple prediction, identifying a favorite animal and, if I have time, a Living or Dead pendulum prediction framed around "One animal is not like the others, can we use this bloodhound-bobbed pendulum to find him?" Depending on the age of the kids, a drawing dup works well and OTL leaves my card in their hands.

For adults, I have more options. If it's a nice clean table, I like to get three people involved using Dani DaOrtiz' Triple Intuition. If not, I'll follow up MD with 6th Scent or a Lie Detector test, and then end with a drawing dup, mini Mental Epic or card calling.

I always have an Invisible Deck and KK on hand and, when the crows is right, I love pulling out Sanctum II or Lunaria with a Momento Mori kicker.

Best regards,
Joe

I was actually thinking of adding a Swami and maybe a coin bend to the mix, they take up little pocket space and play big.

Regarding SG, I used to consider this a big secret but I now think it's better that more people know it.

I've done SG for kids by having them throw up fingers to guess which number I just wrote down. Since it's just one digit, I can (almost) immediately show them they're right.

This played extremely well with the parents and kids alike.

But if I instead played it as my prediction, instead of their guess, the kids would be unimpressed.

Curtis Kam explained it to me: kids already assume grown-ups can do things they can't, so a prediction won't surprise them. But when the kid himself "guesses" the right number, he's just been shown he has an ability that he himself knows he didn't have before.

It's a subtle point that makes a huge difference.

I agree, Jim, that's why the kids get to find the animals, "send their thoughts" and pull my finger!

You can use a set of animal cards, force a card and then make a revelation using your own favorite method. Swami gimmicks are also great providing the angles are covered (sometimes difficult in a restaurant setting).

Max Maven's "leap of fake" is a nice one. Instant re-set and fools them badly.Just uses 4 cards that you can carry in your pocket or wallet.

This is the most recent mentalism routine that I've been doing and it's been going over pretty well.

I put a red ID on the table inside a white card case case. then I have a second blue deck stacked using the breakthrough card system. I show the spectator that when you cut the deck, you get a random card on the top and the bottom. I hand them the deck, tell them to cut the deck. I then tell them that they can take either the top or the bottom card... OR... if they didn't like either of the top or bottom cards, they can cut the cards again and choose either the top or the bottom card. they can keep the card in their pocket or underneath something or anywhere. when they have their card, I put the rest of the deck away in the box (peak at the bottom card) write their card down on a piece of paper or a napkin... and slide it over to them face down. then get the spectator to turn over the napkin and reveal their card. so that's the first effect.

at that point, I remind everyone that the ID has been sitting on the table the entire time... I take it out of the white card case case, then take the ID out of the card case... and reveal that before the trick even started, their selected card was face down in the pack. so that's the second effect.

then I put the ID cards back in the pack and put the pack away. their chosen card from the ID is still on the table or in their hands.... I then grab the s***l deck from the vanishing deck trick out of the same pocket that I just put the cards away in... and say... "ok, I'll do one more" (as a way to justify putting the cards away, and then taking them out again... to mask the deck switch). I put their chosen card that was face down in the ID into the vanishing deck s***l and I tell them that I can make their card disappear. I take the white card case case (i let them examine it quickly if they want) and start to put it over the pack of cards. then explain that the only way to make their card disappear, is to make the whole deck disappear. then I turn over the white card case case to show that the whole deck has vanished.

so I think it's a pretty good little routine. it might take two or three minutes minimum to do. you get two mentalism effects, and one magic effect. even though I think the mentalism part is best part of the trick... I'm finding that most people actually enjoy the deck disappear more even. I guess that's a good thing because you get an escalation of effects. you also end more or less clean. you can't really let them handle the empty card case case (but they can handle it right beforehand)... but all that's left on the table is the blue deck of cards that is completely normal. you're also set up to do a normal card trick as well... except you'll mess up your BCS stack.

the only resetting that needs to be done is to take the card out of the vanishing deck s***l and put it back in the ID and put that in the white card case case.

the only other mentalism effects I do are Entourage and a modified version of a trick called future foretold.

The real challenge is doing Mentalism when it is so noisy no one can hear you speak -- doing an effect without any verbal or written communication at all. This is very impressive and several methods can be adapted for this purpose. I believe this has been discussed on several earlier threads on the Café.

Mentalism in table hopping is great !
I use Magic Wagon's number vision, Sankey's perfect read and sometimes Gambler.
I've been told that Robert Smith's universal impression is perfect for table hopping mentalism...but I don't know the product.

Unfortunately I lost my Universal Impression pad. Still have the marker. Would have worked great in the restaurant.
But yes, it's more difficult when oral communication (which is still verbal, btw) is restricted by noise.

At TGIFriday's I have come to open with either the ID or Brainwave.
I'm still unsure whether to open with my strongest piece, but it is
ideal as you can wrap it up as quickly as you want.
Brainwave doesn't have the suspense that ID has, because the card appears
face up among face down cards. You can add suspense before spreading the deck.

There is a little business card trick I bought several years ago that is perfect. I plan on using it again for an upcoming gig... I doubt the principle is anything new and I apologize for not being able to cite it, but the effect as marketed is called "Fun Da Mentalist". It's kind of difficult to find now but it's great IMO. You not only perform a wonderful piece of mind reading entertainment but you leave them with your business card that has a written reminder of the "occurence" on the back. I have had people continue to tell me (years later) how that one trick impacted them.

It's not too difficult to find, but use quotes around the name and write it with the spaces between parts of words when you google it or you get a wide and very strange assortment of search results. You can also use dashes to separate the parts like this: fun-da-mentalist.

Twisted Sisters. I don't know if Phil Plus 2 qualifies as mentalism, but it's a great trick to do table hopping. Universal Impressions is probably another good one but I have never performed it because I hadn't practiced it enough to feel comfortable with it.

I use the MD and the UFO3. Both are fantastic. I also carry an Add a Number pad with the predicted number on the back of my business card so I leave a card with them. Been doing Bag 4 Life recently as I advertise as a Magician & Mind Reader so I can show 'Magic' as well as read their minds.

Thanks for the NW answer, jpleddington. I know what an NW is but I've never heard it called an SG. Is an SG a particular model of NW, and what do the letters SG stand for? If someone would be so kind as to PM me with the answer(s), I'd be grateful.

Thanks a lot.
