Magical folks:

I'm searching for an entertaining way to start a Rocky Raccoon (spring animal) routine. I've seen the cage with spring and sound effects, which will allow the "animal" to shoot out of the box, created, apparently, by Randi Rain and Christopher Lyle (looks great but a bit pricey for limited use), thru any production box/temple screen, to simply removing the critter from a briefcase (as David Williams does in his Rocky tape). Any thoughts or experiences that might help an old performer (like me) come up with a good way to start the routine? Thanks in advance.

I do a very simple bit using an elope top hat ( which has a l**d ch##b+r). I ask the kids what magicians always have in their hats ( "a rabbit!") and then tell them that I will now pull a rabbit out of the hat.... after a bit of by play I produce my spring skunk.... the kids go nuts ( it's a skunk, it's a skunk!!"), I smell it ( ugh!) and I start my routine.

best

The trouble with a cage - great though the idea is - is that is is an extra bulky item to cart around. Using a hat makes use of something that is already if your show [if that is the case]. Or just produce the racoon from your suitcase, but do it with suspense, tension of anticipation.

The performance makes the magic.

If you have a dove pan you can hollow out an egg, and paint it with tan and black stripes. Ask people if they know what it is? You tell them that it is a raccoon egg, and of course put your egg and some flash paper in the dove pan and light the paper for heat, and then you produce your Rocky from the dove pan.

Rocky can fit in a very, very small cage, which can make an impressive introduction.

The box was quite expensive to have custom made, but Randi did her normal AWESOME JOB in constructing it to my exact specifications. It was awesome but in the end, I sold it after several uses...for a couple of reasons...

1. It was quite large and it was another "something" to lug around to and from the show.

2. I'm just not a Rocky performer. I think you are or you're not. I'm not.

Even tho' it played great, it just never felt right so I ax'ed it from my show and went back to Rabbid!

This is much more who I am!

With all this being said, if you wanted Randi to create you a smaller box, I'm sure she could.

On a side note, I am selling the Red Zuit Suit (and same style Blue Zuit Suit) that you see pictured above. $150 per suit (half off retail) PM me for more info...

If you use the dove pan idea, it's also funny to use with the Rocky Skunk puppet. I hollow out an egg and using black marker, I make the egg look like it has a white stripe in the middle of the egg.

Hasn't any ever heard of a Skunk or Raccoon egg??? HAHA!!!!!

If anything kills every time you're not gigging enough.

I do a Rocky (well I don't think anyone should be calling him by the name it says on the package... I have a Norman) production. Goes well, can do my producing stuff shtick before I do my Raccoon shtick.

My racoon bit the dust a while ago. I have been using a fox for about 3 years now.

I bring it out with it's tail looking like an elephant's trunk, and leather feet, look like eyes..

I tell the story of thinking the puppet was an elephant, but the guy behind the counter told me it was a fox..(orienting the puppet correctly)...

I pause...look at "Bob", and then say so is my wife.(a Fox..not a puppet)
The mixed up orientation at the start of the routine, sets up a funny moment of CPR later in the routine...

Been away from the Café for awhile (too long). Thanks for the great suggestions and advice. They will give me much to ponder as I work on an entertaining (hopefully) routine.
