Hello,
I typically do a 45 minute to one hour show for mixed age children and their families in various venues (libraries, summer camps etc.) I have been recently asked to do a show in a local theater, but if it were possible to extend the show to 90 minutes. I like the one hour length and think the longer show may lose attention of audience. any thoughts on how to effectively lengthen the show or if anyone does a longer show what formula do you use? thanks!

Depending on your audience,I would perform 45 minutes, take an intermissu=ion, then another 40-45. It gives them a break. I would also suggest you find an additional performer like a juggler or variety act to break it up a bit. Place them at the end of the first half or beginning of second.

I am picturing similar to Ron. You might want to do 2 - 30 minute shows. Between the 2 magic acts shows have a juggler for 15 minutes and a mime or clown for another 15 minutes. Explain it will be better to your client.

We (my wife and I) do 90 minute family shows on a regular basis. We do not take intermissions or breaks, but run straight through. We are the only act in the show. It has been quite successful for us. We have a number of regular clients who hire us back year after year and we give them a totally new 90 minute show each year.
So, 90 minute shows are not unreasonable. There definitely is a market out there for them.

We get asked to do 90 minute shows every now and then and we are equipped to deliver them with no issues.
In fact, like RJE2, we have many repeat customers which keeps us constantly creating new material, so we have no problem doing several different totally unique 90 minute shows if needed.
If they are well scripted, polished acts, there is no intermission needed as the audience doesn't have a chance to get restless or bored.

As long as you have the material to entertain an audience for 90 minutes I say do it without an intermission.
Do not stretch your 45 minute show to 90 minutes.
Think of it like a movie. Whenever someone goes to a movie nowadays, they are all around 90 minutes to 2 hours, and without an intermission.

I agree well polished is the key and if you are worth your salt 90 minutes should be easy but that said live shows are a lot diffent than a movie. Movies are edited to keep the audience on a "high" the entire time. Live shows naturally have highs and lows. As a performer you need to place your weakest effects in the middle of the show with your best at the top and bottom of the show. It is also very hard to keep younger audiences going for 90 minutes. A break is better suited for a mixed audience with children. That is my opinion.

You need a lot more than "material for a 90 minute show" to do a 90 minute show.
