Hello Everyone
I am currently residing in South India, though I'll be back to Europe in some months.
I am a PhD student, and I first got into magic at the tender age of 9, with a basic kids magic set. It made a giant leap forward at the age of 11, when my parents - seeing that I had a high interest in all things magical - asked a magician that worked my Aunts Birthday if he could give me some lessons and teach me some stuff.
So he did, unfortunately he did not teach me sleight of hand, since he himself - being a stage Illusionist - did not use it, but he taught me some tricks to do in front of a bigger audience, it started with short and long ropes, multicolored rope joining and the like, then, one year later I went to a magic shop with him and put a lot of my saved money into new tricks. Thus started my "stage career" I had a 30 - 45 Minute Program set up... which was basically only a bunch of tricks with no real connection other than I would perform them, and most of them involved thingss changing colour or bottles turning upside down and the like. I adopted a clownish approach, i.g. tricks that would work only on the second try, or to get an audience member to help me do magic and having him and me have different results etc. and soon found myself working Birthdays for little kids and Kindergarden and Church Celebrations and so on.
Looking back at the photos it seems weird, a 14 year old doing the magic, but people liked it and I made some money (I charged only one tenth of what professionals charged, but for me it was fun and a hobby). I would go on in this matter till the age of 19, then - realizing I had only my old repertoire of tricks and most people in my home town knew them, and besides school and girls and stuff not enough time to learn new ones - abandoned magic for some time. I would do the occasional show at a School Celebration or so, but not more than two times a year.
Now I am 28 and the continuous sting left by the absence of laughter and amazement in the eyes of my spectators has grown too much. Since I have never been a member of any magic clubs or societies, and at this time, living in South India, don't have access to regular magic shops etc. I delved through the internet and started learning sleight of hand Card Stuff, which always fascinated me, but I always thought too difficult to learn and not appropriate for a room of 150 spectators.
I now find immense joy again in learning new tricks and trying to weave routines. And since I have come across this forum when googling for stuff more often than not, I decided to give this a shot.
My plans for the future, besides getting my hands to good use, is reinventing my stage act, and adding a second act consisting of bizzarre magic, since I find that the art of storytelling interwoven with magic is the most admired one by me.
So the next years I will work on my dissertation by day, and by night I will haunt this forum and look for new ways to improve and bring back the magic into my life and the life of others.
If you made it this far, thanks for having me here, I am looking forward to having a good time with you
Daniel

Welcome to the Café. I'm in dreaded ABD (all but dissertation) status myself for my PhD. Also had some magic experiences when younger. Now find it a nice break from work and studies. Enjoy the Café...lots of good insight to be found here.

Thanks for the warm welcome.
Yeah, my location might not be best, but luckily the Age of Internet turns out to be beneficial for magic users, too. Okay, I see the threat posed by youtube and its "revelation" videos, but on the other hand the internet enabled Magic Suppliers to sell me ebooks and DVDs as Downloads (like the Ellusionist Courses, they ofer them as Download as well as regular DVDs, and given the postage costs and delivery times, not tomention the not always reliable post offices here, I was glad to choose the download options).
It's nice that it's so easy now to meet other Illusionists and confer with them online.
See you around

Hi Daniel, if you are still searching for sleight of hand techniques some pretty good teaching (free) is available
at: ehow.com. I've bought quite a bit of things from Penguin Magic, which I love, in which the "magic" is mostly built into the
trick but I think having Classical skills is a great addition or advantage. There are so many great magicians to choose from as teachers,
for card street magic Oz Perlman, and Greg Wilson are great teachers and a really great teacher of card handling or card manipulation at a grand performance artistic level for small or large audiences is Jeff Sheridan.
There must be many other very good courses and sources but these area few I know you would be very pleased with. You may already know of the Tango, Ray Kruepper and Johnson gaff coin products all of which are a great help if you aren't a master of classical coin magic techniques.
I wouldn't mention so much of the "you have to buy it" magic but I have a feeling that once you have that PHD money will be no object .
Some of my very favorite recent purchases from Penguin and Magic Warehouse are the F1-Nitro Wallet, "The Tool", several of the Tango coins like the flipper and expanded shell, The Invisible Deck, The Stripper Deck taught by Oz Perlman, JAM PACK by Greg Wilson... anything by Oz Perlman or Greg Wilson (I've bought lots), Panic by Aaron Fisher, and The Sheridan Course in Card Manipulation. I don't want to leave any one out: I have truly bought thousands of dollars worth of magic lately but ones I've mentioned are some of my very favorites and I think you would really like any of them and find them a great inveestment. Oh, also Daniel, there is something coming out called the Spider Pen Pro that looks fantastic for levitating things.
In case money IS hard to come by for you at the moment, I would, if I could only pick one or two, buy The Stripper and Invisible Decks taught by Oz Perlman and...if any way possible JAM PACK by Greg Wilson or the Sheridan Course in Card Manipulation. If you can master the Sheridan Course in Card Manipulation (which I sure hope I can one day...probably a very long time from now) you will be a Master Magician Daniel with incredible skills.
God Bless you Daniel.

Welcome to the Café. Best of luck as you finish up your PhD! Magic just may prove to be the "escape" that will keep insantiy at bay...
