I have just learned Eugene Burger's out of this world routine, in which he utilizes a ring of luck. I love this concept and am trying to come up with a believable story to go behind it, one hopefully with some meaning to take away.
I went to spain two years ago, to the city of granada near the coast of morroco. It was a beautiful city full of gypsy music, the smell of hashish, and mysterious caves.
I want to tell the story of a homeless gypsy card player/fortuneteller, and his ring of luck that he for some reason gave to me.
This is all part of the story about the ring, then I would go into the routine, where the spectator seperates all the cards by their colors.
But what is the greater meaning behind this? Any thoughts?

It was 2 years ago I traveled to Spain. I'm not sure why, I just felt drawn there. I was looking for somthing, it's hard to put a name to it-a place to belong, that spot in this world where I was needed, wanted, and--I don't know-EXPECTED--anyone ever have that feeling? As tho I had a greater purpose, as tho life were more than random events, biological response, brain chemistry...anyone remember that old song?.."We don't care what your name is boy, we'll never turn you away..."..THAT's what I wanted, that's what I was looking for. It wasn't logical, but I knew I had to go.
I don't know if I found the old gypsy, or if he found me. He was homeless--by choice. There was nothing special about him--but I there was just something about the guy, as tho I had known him my whole life as a good friend, and I knew he had some answers for me. I trusted him at once--not very smart for a stranger in a foreign land!--but--
I found myself telling my life story to this stranger--all my hopes, fears, plans--and he never said a word. I didn't care, somehow I knew--this IS the guy who can tell me what I need to know. I finished, and there was a long moment of silence. Then he removed his ring, and quietly handed it to me. He smiled kindly as he took a small pack of cards from his pocket...
I will never forget the teachings he passed on to me that day. And now, I pass them on to you...

That's just beautiful. This is exactly the mood I wanted to create. thank you so much for this contribution. I'll update this post when I get the custom ring back from the jeweler, and see if I can get a recorded performance up.

Ahhh, the visages of home...Being that you are in Mexico, you could also portray the ring to been found in the Mayan/Aztec ruins, or in Quetzalcoatl, Tenochtitlan, etc. It can contain some sort of mystical/mysterious power, much like the story you already have for it.
Being from Spain, I tend to use a lot of Spanish history, folklore and stories in my storytelling magic. One of my favorites is the Gypsy Curse (wild card plot) routine with ties to a band of Spanish gypsies, and using a real and very old coin as the marker.

Good start, but I think you can build a lot on Belaram's excellent beginning. Let the colors of the cards represent something more meaningful, like the difference between good and evil. We all know that sometimes in life it can be difficult to make such discernments. The ring is said to have the power to clarify such judgements. Let's put it to the test tonight. Or, perhaps the two colors symbolize the many decisions we must make in life, some leading to success, some to failure. This ring, the old Gypsy said, will help you to make those decisions wisely. I thought we might put his claim to the test tonight, etc.
