Look at Sefalaljia, the Stewart James classic routine. You can find the original manuscript (published in Jinx) online. Spellbinder at the Magic Nook website has a "Sefalaljia Revisited" ebook which has some very useful new ideas even if you don't like his basic premise (which is to use a plastic crate rather than a wooden cabinet). I developed my self-lighting candle idea from it. I'm also working on an automated Sefalaljia cabinet (well it's finished really, I just need to take some photos/video)

I'd probably suggest researching the Davenport Brothers? A visit to Amazon should yield some results book wise.

Derren Brown's classic take on the effect can be seen here:

Voodini, originally that was my favorite clip of the spirit cabinet until I saw Derren perform it on his Enigma special: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXSYAKIkYk0

I used a very simple, portable version I learned from John Calvert. I had the opportunity to be in the cabinet with him when he lectured for us several years ago. Hocus Pocus is now selling his version along with the equipment needed: http://www.hocus-pocus.com/static/halloween2.htmlI had made my own.

Thanks for sharing that Chris! Unfortunately Channel 4 has blocked the clip in the UK on copyright grounds! Oh well!

That wasn't a Spirit "Cabinet".

That was a Spirit "House"!

Brown's cabinet, must have been really something!
In the video she starts out sitting on right, and ends up sitting on left! (her R&L)
The spirit must have thrown her all over the place!
Maybe how loud Derren pulled the curtains shut...made him mad!

Very nice find Joshua J! The Evening of Wonders special has an awesome table tipping followed by floating table routine. I love how these two were blended together.

Edit: Dang it .. we can't watch these clips here in the US.

The next "Doccinar," just in case you hadn't heard, is the first of a series focusing on Seance, specifically cabinet seances.
Very exciting stuff. http://www.docchilfordproducts.com/velvet-seance-doccinar/

-Lamar Keene's book "Psychic Mafia" has some great stuff; it's out of print, but it's not too expensive and you can get it free at the library.
-Tarbell also has some good stuff if I remember correctly.
-"Table Rappers" by Ronald Pearsall is also a great description of the faked seances that were performed in the spiritualist heyday, really interesting stuff.

Off the top of my head there are three basic ways of doing it.
-serious/real, as or like a spiritualist seance
-dramatic, David Copperfields cabinet/house/whatever is very dramatic but no one is going to think it's real
-comedic, John Calvert's routine is hilarious and very simple
-mixed, I think the Falkenstein's routine is somewhere between the serious/real and the dramatic

Which style are you interested in doing?

“Love is the magician that pulls man out of his own hat.” -Ben Hecht
