I am looking for a good set of cups and balls. I handled a set of phoenix cups and balls recently and was impressed with their rugged exterior and good weight distribution. I am hesitant to buy a set online without handling them first so I was wondering if anyone is familiar with the phoenix set and if they know of a comparable set. The phoenix set is too expensive for me right now, otherwise I'd just buy those, but I really like their color (I dislike anything shiny), size, and weight. They have an antique feel to them that is elegant in a more subtle way

Save up and buy... Also, check out bargain Joe Porper brass cups now half price special. $300 less wand and box.

There are a number of incarnations of the Phoenix cups. They were first made and sold by Tom Franks (a member here on the Café'). Tom sold them with a certificate, a custom carry box, a wand (Ironwood?), and a set of 4 balls. Tom also sold several sets of seconds at a very low price. These seconds were nice but had imperfections that to Tom's eye kept them from being top of the line.
The cups were later (and perhaps still are) made by Rings and Things II. I think they even modified the design just a little.
Somewhere on the Café' there is a very detailed review of these cups and discussion. I believe that cup expert Bill Palmer (aslo a member of the Café') posted an indepth review of them.
I totally agree with Pete. Save your money until you can afford exactly what you want. Great sets often become available here on the Café'. I cannot think of any set make that hasn't been reviewed. Every set has its pros and cons. Get what you like and fits the routine you want to perform.

I bought a set of Tom's cups off of e-bay several years ago and use them constantly. I love them, but then they work for the routine that I use. When you talk about cost you have to remember that you get what you pay for and a pro needs professional props. I agree with the others on here about RNT II. If I were to buy a 2nd set of these cups I'd buy from Donnie!

I saw the Tom Frank brand for $200 on his site. I really can't buy them since I go to school full time, which is to say anything above that price range is unattainable by myself at this point in time. The most I am able to spend is about $100 for a set

I have different sets of cups. Since I live in Europe I have a W. Seidl Cup Set from Vienna. A couple of years ago I bought a set from
penguin magic. The "Penguin cups copper" http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/742 are very good and for 99 $ you will get a very nice set.

Not to mention that you can find sets a bit below $100 and up. The Penguin cups are okay, but don't handle the larger loads. And yes, Donnie Buckley IS the owner of RNT II. Check them out!

I second Pete's statement, save up and get I have set of Phoenix cups, highest recommendations. If you just want to play around or just starting out, get a cheap plastic set. But for performances, get the Phoenix.

Contact Tom Frank directly he is a great guy and will do you right, tell him your situation and asks if he has any of his seconds still available. That is what I currently use as I beat the hell out of the cups(something he advised me to do years ago)and am not looking for or what a pristine look so I am quite happy with the used look. Also try to purchase an ironwood wand from him as they are hard as a rock and will not crack or break with use, at least they have never done so for me.
