Do not seem to be many packet effects on the market. They were hot in the 70's, but kind of died out. They are still all good effects. I still do Color Monte by E&W and Cascade by Roy Walton and of course 8 Card Brainwave by Nick Trost.

I remember packet tricks being popular through the 90s when I was learning magic, as well. It's true that they seem to be on the wane these days, but I confess to not missing them - it makes for much less cluttered pockets, and I don't pine for the days when I had piles of card wallets lying around in my magic drawer.

From a spectator standpoint, he would pull out a deck of cards, remove a small packet, return or table the rest, and perform a trick. The packet trick cards looked like they had come from a regular deck. Combine that with something like the following for storage (the image is clickable), and all the inconvenience you mention is gone: Craig

Why not get a pack of Gaffed cards, and make your own? A pack of 52 gaffed Bicycles can give you DOZENS of different tricks! Look elsewhere in this forum for a topic on Gaffed Cards...
Craig, I like that book! Great idea! Doug |

I think I have around 30-35 packets tricks stored in it, mostly 4-card packets with some larger (up to 9 cards) and some smaller. The book expands in thickness to match the contents so it's perfect! Now I just need to scan in all the instruction sheets and transfer them to my iPad for reference and I'm all set. If I get a chance I'll take some photos and post them. Craig

Just to add that there were two dealers that sold E&W packet tricks in London at the time - namely The London Magic Centre (LMC) and Repro.
I don't remember ever seeing a 'dem' of any where the dealer didn't balls up the trick - by doing an Elmsley when it should have been a Jordan (or vice versa) during the third phase, etc. In fact, I remember a guy (Paddy Kane) who worked at the LMC throwing the Emerson & West trick 'The Whole Thing' at me after the fourth botched attempt and saying "take this bloody thing home for me Bal and work it out". Add to that his numerous bodged attempts at 'Rat Traps' - "here's a rat, and here's a trap, now here's a rat [as a trap appeared] WTF no hang on it's - oh hang on, no that's the wrong order ennit". Then it would start all over again for the next botched attempt (before the cards finally got put back in their little vinyl wallet and got hurled across the shop)! Used to have us all in absolute stitches! Happy days that are no longer with us............thanks to internet magic 'shops'.

Note: These are "Do-It-Yourself" Packet effects and cannot be purchased ready-made anywhere. But the original poster didn't stipulate you had to be able to buy them ready-made. "Qua-Fiki's Wild Reindeer Games" - From The Wizards' Journal #23 I don't know if McDonald's Aces can be considered a packet trick, but "McFiki's JUMBO Aces" can be made up as a packet effect (in any size) with just the cards necessary to perform it without draging the whole deck along. Also from The Wizards' Journal #23 Also, Qua-Fiki's "Sooper Dooper Looper" from The Wizards' Journal #22 can be made up as a packet trick. Which is the best? I don't play those games and you shouldn't either. What's best is what's right for you and if it tickles your "magic twitch" to perform it.

"Three" looks good, but at $50, it must be the most expensive packet trick on the market. I remember when you could get a good packet trick for about $5.00... oh wait, that's what they sell everything for on The Magic Nook. I must have $5 magic on the brain.

That was indeed only just 36 years ago... Paddy Kane here, just landed in the Café, and a lovely place it is too. I may well stick around for a bit and hopefully will post some useful banter along the way too. Funny thing is, only about a month or so ago - I actually threw out all the packet tricks that I still had in my plastic wallets, Rat Traps included!. |
