If you are a beginner, there is no better place to start than with Annemann's "Practical Mental Effects" (aka "Practical Mental Magic") and Corinda's 13 steps.
Read the books. Good thoughts, Bob Cassidy |

What bob said... then use some casino playing cards with a book about poker...it'll all make sense visually and mentally then... tying the theme together helps a lot...

I agree with IAIN, especially because the costs for different effects can vary wildly. Context is important to establish.

There is an excellent booktest routine in Chuck Hickok's Mentalism Incorporated. It uses both gimmicked books and regular books and involves several audience members. A number of methods are used. As a result--gimmicked, non gimmicked and multiple methods--it is very difficult to figure a solution.

Go in a different direction by checking out the stuff available from Outlaw Effects.

I must clarify that I am a novice in mental magic.
One of the best effects I like is just book tests. It may very well be for stage performances and should preferably not involve stooges. A clean and direct routine where the spectator can choose a book and select any word or more and you can immediately tell which or what word it is. Would be great fun to find a version where two spectators will choose their words and you know what the words are. If I'm not mistaken, it's about the performance, and how good you are at acting and presenting the effect itself. Best Regards //DC |

For large stage shows I always use MOABT...but I present it as a visual mindreading effect, so I am drawing the image my spectator has been thinking of. For small "sorta spooky" presentations, you will never ever do better than Luna 1935 from Outlaw.
I also strongly urge you to read the 13 Steps and Practical Mental Effects...and to familiarize yourself with Hoy's routine. David

Hi David. Sound advice on the 2 books you mentioned. Any chance you have played with MOABT2 yet? Any big differences from the original?

I only use MOABT 2. I never owned 1.
Bob Cassidy suggested I pick it up last year and I've been sing it since. It's simply a wonderful effect. David

There's a nifty method for for***g a page in an impromptu book test in the large Scryer & Friends book.
