I'm writing quickly and leaving many wonderful things out as my brain attempts to process this latest offering...
If you are looking for rich tales filled with complex characters dealing with issues relevant to Bizarre Magic: Get this book. If you crave inspiration and would like your imagination stimulated by fine writing: Get this book. I always enjoyed Iain Dunford's work and his contributions to this forum are always smart and full of charm. His passion is without question. But not until reading "Imaginary Mediumship" did I realize we were in presence of a gifted author. I'll repeat that because it's important: not until reading "Imaginary Mediumship" did I realize we were in presence of a gifted author. You will revel in tales of fraudulent mediums, psychics and swami's. You will adore the exploits of Professor Fairhorne and Dr. Balgores, two turn of the century paranormal investigators, on the hunt for answers to life's most basic question: where do we go when we die? The strange phenomena they encounter has been documented between the covers of this book and now we as modern performers may continue their investigations and share them with our own audiences. Or we may simply use these tails as springboards for our own original storytelling and presentations. Either way, this is a worthy read and one which gets the creative juices flowing in the right direction. This is not a traditional book of "tricks" and "methods". Routines and ideas are taught, but they are taught within the telling of a story. You read the book, and you walk away with your head swimming with ideas. And like any great book filled with atmosphere and memorable characters, you will want to go back and read it several more times. So not only are you purchasing a fine piece of writing, but you're getting routines and presentations ripe with backstory. Complex and thought provoking are the words I will use. Inspired, inspiring and masterful are a few more. Do yourself a favor and get this book. |

I have also had the pleasure of reading this book; simply delightful.
I am just waiting until I have enough time to write a review that will do this book justice. My favourite book of the year so far. Congratulations to Iain on an amazing book, you are a very gifted storyteller. I have already thought of two routines I would like to develop further after reading this and I am sure there will be more. Because I will be reading this again, and again. An important book for all performers in my opinion, get it. I can't wait to see what you write next. http://www.lulu.com/shop/iain-dunford/im......119.html |

Its from one of the pieces within, a transcript from a medium realising what he is actually doing... everyone is a medium if they can invoke their imagination and memory...

Imaginary Mediumship
I have known Iain for many, many decades, but have only started talking to him recently. Partly due to the fact that I have become aware of the quality and experimental nature of his recent work, and partly because he contacted me. I have been really very excited by the direction (this should be in the plural, as Iain is the epitome of a divergent thinker) his mind in taking. Imaginary mediumship, or IM as is fashionable these days, is a good example of this. Come to this book (a *book* thank The Lord!) with a closed mind and you will be confused. You will find yourself muttering darkly ; "where are the tricks!". Well there are 'tricks' cleverly integrated into the narrative, but looking for them is seriously missing the point. Let me tell you something... you already know enough tricks, you do not need any more.... Let it go, work on whet you already know... Now look over here, this is interesting, this will take you further. I see Iain's book as an entertainment for people who are interested in magic. Maybe we can broaden this out to people who are interested in interesting things. Is is a series of short stories; very short in some cases. Embedded in these stories are performance ideas, contexts, scripts, 'patter' and yes... Tricks! So, a radical take on how we present ideas. On one level, the erudite reader can just sit back in his dressing gown, pour a glass of old port and languish lazily between the sheets of the book. To me this is its finest use. Or the more hungry magician can don his half moon spectacles , pick up his notepad (ungaffed) and suck out some genuinely interesting ideas. The lazy, halfwit of the YouTube generation can scratch its itchy head, cuss and pollute the forums with its ignorant comments. For such a project to work, the writing has to be good. Here the writing is very good indeed. I wish I could write with such economy. For economy of style is not only essential in a short story, it is also very fashionable I hear. To use as few words as needed to conjure in the mind rich visual tableaus, replete with sound, smells, and even a sense of texture, to produce sentences that are not so long that the reader has forgotten quite how the sentence started by the time the miserable soul has reached the end, is an art that I fear I will never possess, but an ability that comes effortlessly to Mr Dunsford. I really do like the way that you can take away the few short words that comprise one of these tales and allow your imagination to unpack it at its leisure. I see each tale as a packet of seeds that Mr Dunsford generously sprinkles on the readers imagination. Obviously he can do nothing to influence the quality of the soil, but give due husbandry by the reader, these seeds will germinate over time and reward you with an inner word that you can visit and draw inspiration from. I remember writing some stuff a while back with the late, great Alexandria; ideas that had some parallels. These were tales that contained impossible ideas that seemed possible. The whole thing was to make a novella. The project was shelved as it received zero interest (other than a somewhat disinterested hostility) from the magic community. I hope that in these more enlightened days Mr Dunsford's project fairs better. It should fair better in this forum as the minds here are capable of more complex thought than in the 'pennies' forum. My advice to the wise purchaser is to alter the direction of your expectations and just enjoy the ride. This is the best stuff you will read from our own community

This is an absolutely terrific book.
Imaginary Mediumship is right! Iain has channeled some intriguing characters who seem like Holmes and Watson trapped in an Ormond McGill world. In addition to the adventures of our intrepid heros there are several practical and astonishing effects that they have uncovered, one of which I absorbed into my repertoire minutes within reading it. And as others have pointed out, its fantastically well-written, not just for "a magic book" but for any kind of literature. In fact, I think Iain may have created an entirely new literary genre. d

I was thinking as well that Iain should seek publication outside the magic world. The stories really stand on their own as entertainment

Blimey... thanks once again for the very kind comments and support... I do honestly hope anyone who buys it enjoys the stories, as well as the either blatantly described methods, and the hidden ones...and that the stories themselves hopefully become a stepping stone to your own tales that you tell...cheers...

I read this book on a recent flight to Singapore (although I'm not sure if my copy is the final copy?), and as with anything I read from Dunners I was chuffed. One of the things I've always loved about Iain (other than his Nan) is his ability to story tell, and this book showcases some of his best work so far. It's absolutely fantastic, and everyone should grab a copy.
I still think that he should write a full novel. Put down the rum and the xbox and get cracking! |
