Probably 99% of you already know this, but I finally did this myself today. On the 2013 Creativity at Sea cruise, Oscar Munoz put out a tiny wireless speaker (smaller than a baseball)- while his very nice wife from her seat ran his music on and off simply via her cell phone. Wow I thought, even though that is not a complete portable PA system, it sure is a neato way add some music to one's act with virtually zero extra space needed (since most of us usually carry our cell phones anyway).
I stopped in over at my Verizon store today, they had a very small Bluetooth HoMedics Audio "Jam" wireless speaker (comes in a variety of neat colors, I bought a purple one) for $50. The friendly Verizon guy set up my entire music account on my cell phone even downloading "MagicBus" by The Who onto my phone (what else would I use?). He then played it for me through my new wireless speaker. BIG sound, small size, completely wireless, rechargeable and portable, up to 4 hours of continuous use. Even comes in a nice sturdy jelly jar sized container if want to use that as a long term protective case for the speaker. Now that is a cool way to add music to an act for only $50! I plan to attach this small speaker along with my cell phone with some velco on the inside of my magic stand, all ready to go. Just amazing this new micro sound technology, especially if going to be used for small audiences. |

I've been using an iHome portable speaker system and have had lots of fun with it at shows - plug my iPhone into it and can fill a very large classroom with it.

I have found having a larger system with high quality, gives better tones.
If you use the very small tennis ball size speakers, alhough they may have the volume, the tones will lack in quality. The smallest speaker for me is the ucube, http://www.djtechpro.com/product_detail.......t_id=437 It has the ability to provide a range of tones, and the cube design gives it a bit of guts. Then I go to a larger portable PA system for more people. The sound quality improves significantly!

As a quick and dirty emergency alternative to a "real" speaker, I have used a small cardboard box as a sort of resonator for music played directly from my iPhone. Although it wasn't a high-end stereo, the sound quality was surprisingly good. Play around with different box sizes and phone placements beforehand, and you will be prepared.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...
