I was called to perform 2-1 hour magic shows at an elementary school in February. I wanted to try part of my feather flower act also. I did perform most of phase 1 of my 3 phase feather act in front of the students. I did receive a lot of oohs and aahs. Too many if you ask me.
I am not professional with the act yet. To help perform the act in a smooth manner I will perform parts of the act and review them on video. I did put the act on Youtube. Because of the flaws I decided to keep it private. If you posted in any of the following threads where I was searching for feather flower help, I am willing to send you a link to the private video. Send me a PM if you are interested in the link to watch the video. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=8 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=8 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=8 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=8 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=8 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=8 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=8 For those who I send the link to, be sure to come back to this thread and add your comments. |

I don't remember where I posted a suggestion but someone at another web site suggested a white trellis in the background to hang some of your flowers, did you do that?

Overall, great job Mike. I've always used tubes to produce my bouquets as I cant do steals wearing a vest. Well, I CAN, but not as many steals as you do! I've also used the garden of flowers foulard in the past. Love the reactions from the kids.

Thanks Tommy. But I am not wearing a vest. It is all about the jacket. I took it to a seamstress. I did pin two more on myself recently. I will take it back to the seamstress to have them sewn on.
Thanks for bringing up vest. I do have a dove vest. I will play with it to see if I can add some more. |

Mike,
I have been on the road and away from the computer. Drop me the links and I will give you some feedback. Trllis is a good idea but you have to make one that packs down. I have some drawing on that also. After 30 years of doing flowers, I have tried it almost all. Richard

Mike that was a nice start. You stepped on the momentum of your act at several points. I emailed you some ideas and hope that they are helpful.

Almost like a dove act, but flowers!
Are you using any Bouquet Darts in other parts of the act? That would make for a good finale, all along the front of the stage, and also will be very fast paced for a big finish.(I do not have any, but I always loved the Bouquet Darts.

Mike, I agree about the Bouquet darts, I have seen every magician that has attempted to stick a dart in a board has missed and/or the bouquet was not thrown hard enough to stick and stay up, including Blackstone Jr.
Maybe it is just because of not enough practice, but it looks very unprofessional when the dart falls over or does not stick. I often wonder, why would flowers have a pointed nail in them anyway. I don't get it myself. |

Back in the '70s, I worked the restored theater in Rockford IL in which Harry Sr. "debuted" his ENCHANTED GARDEN. I saw Harry do it 4 or 5 times in the '40a. It certainly "filled the stage"!
I was always interested in the construction of the bag of darts that he stole. Visiting Bob Lund one day, he handed me the bag and some of the flowers. It had trouped! It had several clever things in its construction. When I did a tour of phone promotion dates,in the early '80s, I put together a flower opening and used several of Harry's ideas. It played well. I missed your U tube -- I just joined this outfit in December. I would be happy to review and comment if you care to send me the necessary "passwords", etc. I don't consider myself a complete expert, but I may have something worth contributing. Speaking of trellises> The guy who hand lettered the Rice "Encyclopedia of Silks" (Frank Martineau, I believe) worked Abbott's GTG years ago and did the FLOWER TRELIS ACT that Percy used to sell. (Percy had developed a special extra long trellis for a Barnes-Carruthers Fair unit--I think there'a a picture in Catalog #7.) Frances Marshall, reviewing the show, called it the "Gangster Funeral Act"!

I actually cut the rings off of 4 Bouquets then disassembled good quality darts from actual darts you use for a dart board. Used some lead weights (fishing weights) to give it a little weight so they would fall the right way and attached them AND the dart to the bottom of the bouquet. They work perfect. My target board is cut from ceiling tiles that you use from drop ceilings. I cut the tiles on my table saw 12" square and decorated the borders with some simple ribbon. I simply drop the bouquet over the target board, sort of letting it just drop out of your hand. The weight of the bouquet falling is enough to impale itself onto the ceiling tile and I've never had one fall over, nor have I missed. You can see me using the dart bouquets in the beginning of my promo video for my new reading show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMW3Ettukik

I have never used bouquet darts as they are tricky to use. Often they will puncture you or get hooked up in the fabric. But having said that, I certainly have had a lot of experience making and working them outside of my own act for Blackstone Jr., Scott Alecanader and Marc Gilday.
First, it is much more than just putting a sharp point or fishing weight on the bouquet. They have to be relatively balanced with a good weight that either allows a replacable point or a resharpeable point. A board is an absolute must. Throw a dart in a theater flower you might be paying thousands to others to redo the floor. You can make a collapsible flower planter box that you can strike easily off the stage when the act is over. One important factor in any flower act is never use pots to put the bouquets into. If they see four pots and you put a bouquet in one, they know three more are coming. Dick, I know what you mean about Sr.'s load bag. But let's keep the details off this forum. For those that really need to know the details, I will work with them. Let's just say that even Jr. did not make the bag the way I told him to like his dad's. Mike I will try to get you some more ideas when I get a chance to look at the video more. First glance is you have a good start. Maybe too much movement without reason but that will tighten up as you do the act. Richard

Wow that is creative of you Tommy. You were surely born a natural genius. Your action on video says it all. I would feel a lot more comfortable just dropping them on the target using the matter you describe. I would not have to put any force in a throw worrying if it will hit and stand up. Thanks.

Richard, I may have sounded like I haphazardly threw weights and darts together but I was very conscious about distributing the weight around the lower end of the dart. Since these darts come out of a tube, there is no concern about getting caught up on material. The combination of the real darts getting dropped onto the ceiling tiles works very well, as we all know a ceiling tile is not too hard of a material and accepts the dart very well. I know, because I've been using this now for two years straight in my new reading program. I think what it boils down to is I've found something that works for me. As the audience was filing out of the gym last week, student were walking by the stage, looking at the bouquets on the tiles and I heard one kids say " Ah I see! MAGNETS!."

Tommy, as you said.. works for you. I agree. I never say never. If something works for you great. I just base it on my experience with darts that I have learned over 30 years of making the stuff.

Great Ideas Tommy! May I use your idea, if I decide to use darts? I always loved darts, but just never got around to using them. I am a kids/family show performer also, and it is good to hear from someone doing the same thing in the real world every day like I am. Thanks and take care,

One thing I found when producing dart bouquets is to throw them UP in the air, so they travel in an arc before they hit the board. The extra height (top of the arc about 8 feet in the air) gives them added momentum when they hit the board and they ALWAYS land upright (providing they are properly weighted.) This works better than throwing them down to the board after producing them. Keep the points sharp. I use soft pine (painted black) for the boards 1 ft. x 8 ft. - One on each side of the stage - across the front. With 8 big bouquets (4 on each side of the stage) it fills the stage.
