Some magician, a recent one I believe, said the people gathered around a performer in the street are not spectators but participants. {I'd like to know who said that]. His thinking was along the lines that they are not just watching on placidly and remotely, but are part of the unfolding event. Their help is asked for, and their emotions are tied up in what is happening. I started off calling them the audience, but that means people who hear. So I changed to spectators - people who see. Participants seems a better word. Anybody got a general name for people gathered around a street magician, or any magician for that matter, and taking an active part in the Show?

I always thought of them as the crowd.
