I have just started Hat Manipulation and Juggling with the Nils Poll hat 3 weeks ago. So far, I have been able to do moves with 1, 2 and 3 hats now. I noticed that the these hats soften a bit over practice. Does this affect the performance? Or is it better when it is softer?
So far, I have collected 9 Nils Poll hats, two of them is a size 7 1/2 and one is a size 7 1/4. 6 of them is 7 3/8. Does it matter if I use various sizes or should I just stick to one size?

I just got My first Nils Poll hat as a gift from a very kind gentleman, across the pond. (Im in USA)
Started to work on some one hat tricks. Ill eventually get more so pricey (still in shock and awe of getting a triple weight from someone who knows me from conventions only!) Wish I had some advice to give you but I will be checking back to see what I may need to know. Hope we can see some more posts from people that have some experience. |

Nils Pol hats are great for most tricks. The only thing they're not so good for is balance tricks. For that you'd need a stiff brim bowler. Other than that they are great!

Hi Lou
I'm sorry I just noticed your post. Go to http://www.dube.com/ I saw three books on manipulation and one DVD on hat juggling by Andy Head I recommend the Andy Head DVD, but you have several things to choose from Brian Dube.

Thank you FuDD, Roslyn and Al for sharing your replies to my post.
Fudd, you are lucky to receive that hat as a gift. Good luck to both of us. Roslyn, you are right, I am having a difficult time trying to balance this on my nose. Right now, I can only hold it for 3 seconds. Al Angelo, I have the Manipulative Miscellanea book and Andy Head DVD from Dube. Both are great to learn on. What are the other 2 books? Aside from that, there is also a chapter on my book "The Complete Juggler" by Dave Finnigan on Hat Juggling. Another good download video is Little Paul's "Tricks with Hats". Right now, I am learning 3 hat moves. I practice 2 hours a day. I hope to be able to add this to my shows by October. The only problem I might encounter are low ceiling venues where I have to limit to low throws. This is a picture of my Nils Poll hats. I have 10. I am planning to collect more soon to match my costumes. I am also going to practice on my Flying Hats if I get to perform on high ceiling venues.

Check out the Fettuccine brothers on youtube. There is also a Mexican juggler who boonerang's his straw hats out into the audience too, but I see from your pictures that you probably have already done that.

The nills poll dvd from passe passe has some nice tricks too. Some similair as the one's from little paul but a lot different too as the nilss poll vd is more on hat juggling.
My dvd is a bit of a mess with no menu and everything is on it twice but it came for free with three juggling hats from passepasse so maybe (I am not sure but I hope as I see they now go for 30 euro) the ones he sells are better on that. Though I do not really care (especially beciause it was a free gift) and as most important thing is to be able to watch the tricks and it was a nice free gift with the hats! http://www.passepasse.com/jonglerie-jong......ris.html |

Andy Head's material is great for beginners. I have something of his on VHS.
Little Paul's material is great. Plus he's just a nice guy. So get that if you don't have it. I have the free DVD that came with some hats I bought from Passe Passe years ago and for a freebie it's very high quality. Not sure I'd pay 30EURO for it, but if you can find a secondhand copy for 10-15EURO I'd definitely recommend picking it up. For the most part though I'd stick to YouTube and Juggling.tv. Since jugglers are great when it comes to sharing tricks there's generally loads of stuff on the web available free.

Hey Lou, nice to hear your interest.
I´m going to send you down a different track here,... maybe you´ll be interested. I find Nils Poll´s hats don´t look like hats. I see them more as a `Juggling Prop`. And you know what that means,.. ".. they do the work themselves." (this `thought´ is at least, often, in the minds of the audience.) I prefer standard Bowlers or stiff wool Top Hats. Both, prepared. For added weight, I glue leather in the interior and ON the brim. I´m now working with a prepared Chapeau Claque. I stripped the silk off and re-clothed with a durable polyester. The weight from the frame is good,... and the colour is nice. The `egg´/ head shape, however; demands a bit more manipulative skill. Instruction wise, I really recommend George De Mott´s "So you want to be a Juggler". He WAS a great hat manipulator,... and shares a lot. tosses and smiles, gallagher. |

Thank you Al, esther, Rotten, Roslyn and gallagher for your replies. I really appreciate your knowledge on this matter.
Al, yes, I noticed that there is only one video on youtube on the boomerang hats with that Mexican juggler. I wish there was more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHS4leprrn4&feature=youtu.be esther_scheffer, thanks for letting me know that there is a dvd on juggling hats by Nils Poll Roslyn, I searched the web for this Nils Poll dvd and it is only available on the French juggling shop. I wish I could buy it somewhere else. You are right, the best sources to learn more moves is Youtube and Juggle.tv. I download and slow mo the moves I want to learn. I also heard that there is also another hat dvd called "Urban Tumble". gallagher, I agree with you that the Nils Poll hats don't look like real hats. But I find them easier to learn and use as compared to the oblong shaped derby hats. I have tried the stiff Dube Derby Hat and it hits my skull a bit. Maybe, later, as I progress, I also plan to get the Top Hat weighted version. BTW, I noticed that some of my hats have different weights despite the fact that they are the same size. I will glue a heavy cloth to balance them.

I could sent you the Nils Pol hat juggling in Paris dvd for 15 euro including shipping if you like.
That is without a box and in an enveloppe (with no insurance or tracing I guess.) NOT a copy though, just as it came from passepasse shop Paris. As I said no menu on it. Runtime is 45 minutes. Let me know if you are interested. But if you already ordered Andy Hat's and little Paul 's and Urban tumble dvd you might have enough for now I am also willing to trade it for Andy Hat or Urban Tumble once (as long as I still have it at that)you have enough from one of them. (Little Pauls I already own (on vhs). ) |

Oh also look up Lorenzo Masterpietro on youtube. He's great. (no tutorials or so but for sure fun to watch his videos) He taught a masterclass at EJC in Basque country some years ago. That was great!

I just got my first Nills Poll Hat. Excited to learn some hat moves. Good advice in this thread. One thing about the look of these hats. You can shape them in a few standard styles to make them look more typical, with a lean toward a comedic feel. Here is a picture...

For many years I used wool top hats for my hat juggling. I reinforced the brim with coat hanger wire, which helped with moves where the hat is twirled in the fingers by the brim. Recently I switched to Nills Poll hats. I really like them, as they make many hat juggling tricks way easier...especially tricks that involve rolling the hat (over arms and shoulders, down the back etc.). I also like that the hats are symmetrical, so catching them on the head is way easier, then with an oval hat.
I understand that Poll hats do have a stiffner sewn inside the binding along the edge of the brim, so even if these triple weight hats do soften up some, the brim stiffner should continue to allow the hat to perform well. I have been working through the Nills Poll Hat Juggling in Paris Video. Some of the other sources mentioned are what I first learned from in the early 80's. The Nills Poll video has some newer fun hat tricks to learn that I didn't already know. I recommend it, especially for those who already know the old classic hat tricks... I watched the video of Lorenzo Masterpietro...great stuff...!! |
