I was thinking much the same thing; and there's a fire book version of it. Does this one work on the same principle as the Book of Merlin? I appreciate any input on this as well!

I think it is just to obvious a method to actually spend any money on this apparatus. Nice idea, but not a fooler.
There are just to many good prop productions to waste money on this. Take a look at http://www.abbottmagic.com in the livestock section. |

Maybe I'm a bit more dense than the next magician, but it didn't seem all that obvious to me once body loads are ruled out. I anticipate that less accustomed audience than I would be more impacted.

I guess anyone can find justification to purchase a something they are interested in. There are 2 discrepancies in the presentation and handling that will not fly by anyone. When their are totally logical props out there to produce livestock, why go for illogical one and pass up the totally amazing ones.
Just because it is in the form of a book is not a good reason to a non-effective prop. Carnival Ribbon's is way to produce a dove without body loads, and Alan Shaxon's Rabbit from Hat is a more magical choice for a rabbit. A really flashy way to produce a rabbit is with a Abbott's livestock bag or Richard Hughes livestock scarf. Yes, the latter to do take practice and is a takes a little more effort then opening a overly thick box that looks like a book. In the end it is your decision, good luck. |

Bill, I think you're looking at things through the eyes of a magician and not those of layman. Look at the bowling ball from briefcase illusion. Magicians can figure this out quite easily but to a layman, there is no way a bowling ball could be inside a briefcase. I believe this is the same with the dove and rabbit book. To a layman, the question arises, "how can a rabbit or dove be inside the book.
A lot has to do with presentation and the videos's I've seen leave a lot to be desired. The handling is awkward but with practice, that can be overcome.

Bill's got a point in that, classically speaking, an animal from scarves, a hat, or something else that's more "traditional" makes more sense than a book. I also agree that a magician will likely see the book as a thinly disguised box, which is why the book is made to look too small for the animal, to dispel that idea.
However, books fit the character that I portray much more easily than scarves. I have a kind of trademark hat that I wear and bringing out another simply for animal production is more suspicious than whipping out another book off of my shelf. Considering also that I often perform for schools and I attempt to incorporate messages in each of my illusions fit the book motif rather well. Fortunately for me, I'm not out to fool magicians, but to provide a bit of wonder to the layperson, which is why I merely wanted to know if it worked off of the same principle of another dove book illusion, as opposed to whether a magician could see through the gimmick. -Tom
