I've seen this posted many times but I want to get some fresh answers and it's fun.
Here's the idea..............Pretend that you can now only perform 3 tricks the rest of your life. What would they be? Choose an opener, middle, and closer. Can be close up or stage. Dave |

Excellent Bill !
You made my day, specially because I've written about one and a half pages to Dick Oslund on PM and I didn't know what happend, but everything vanished it a flash...Gone ! Hasta la vista baby ! And of course no copy... so I ony have to start again from the beginning... I was so upset ! But know I'm laughing out loud, thanks to you Bill. That said, your aswer is perfect. It's an excellent exemple of an opener, a middle and a closer...a real life exemple. Oliver. |

Only 3 tricks.............not enough.....but here we go.
Close-up Walkaround - Opener: Pop Haydn's Chicago Surprise Middle: Stephen Bargatze's Liar card trick Closer: ACR w/ TW ringbox ending Close-up Show - Opener: Cards Across (Jim Ryan, Tom Mullica, Hannibal) Middle: Tom Mullica's Taradiddle Closer: Multiple selection routine(Rick Merrill, Doc Eason, Tom Mullica) Parlor - Opener: Multiple selection routine Middle: Taradiddle Closer: Linking Finger Rings Stage - Opener: Card Manipulation Middle: Multiplying Billiard Balls Closer: Linking Rings Just to clarify, other then the walkaround set, I'd NEVER do just 3 routines. EVER! I'd add lots of gags and bits. I hate this topic. I feel guilty for leaving out other routines which I love. -Leo |

For some people. One trick/routine makes them famous. Three in their hands 3 would be too many.

I have given my suggestions previously in questions like this, and my opinion has not changed.
An opening should introduce what type of how they will be seeing, it like picking a movie, if the opening to the movies is not exciting and tell the audience what type of movie they will be watching, then you will lose a lot of viewers. An opening can also show an array of magic tricks to music. I have a sequence I listed in the silk section that I have used for years. This type of opening, will hit your audience with a flurry of flashy magic. You will not introduce yourself until after this opening. The middle should be a trick you like to perform and it a little more involved and has very strong magic. The climax should say, "That's All Folks!", and have a feel good ending. Solid opening's are Vanishing Cane in Newspaper, Sponge Ball to Jumbo or Giant Square, and Six Bill or Card repeat. These trick will tell your audience what your personality is like, and hopefully the show will be fun to watch and participate in. The middle should be your feature trick, like "Bill or Card to" effects, Card Sword, The Magic Lesson with a Handkerchief or Necktie, and Milk or Bill in Light Bulb, or fingering or coin in Nest of Boxes or Ball of Wool. These use audience participation and usually take longer to present then other tricks you are showing. In other words a feature trick presentation. Finale's could be Hydrostatic Glass, Multiplying Bottles, Duke's Dye Version, or The Linking Rings. All these tricks should be tricks you can really sell, not something you threw together just before the show date. This is where you can really shine as a performer. The tricks also has to fit your personality perfectly. |
