You're welcome! Nothing makes me happier than hearing that smiles, laughter and magic are being spread around since I posted this.
I sure would like to hear the juicy details about your performance and the reactions.

Itsmagic,
I'm glad to hear your sample arrived. I mailed out a few, and was beginning to wonder if my little lady bug friends had flown to their designated destination. Will you need more help in making them? Do you want to do it yourself, or do you want my hands to do it?

Did 'em again last night in a country club bar setting. It was funny watching the elegantly dressed ladies scream when the little bugs showed up. Definitely the best set I did all night. Even had people dragging me around saying: "Show her the lady bugs"!

That's exactly what they do to me! I'll do all my best material, and invariably someone will say "Show her the lady bugs!"
It seems to be universal!

Can't wait to try them!
I bought a 97 cent jar of fabric paint. I'm curious to see how it works. It was really easy to make the bugs- you basically inject the paint into the sponge. I made 4 "adults" and 20 "babies."

Theodore,
With the puffy paint, can you puff the sponges up (or wash them) in water? Thanks.

I've seen Rod Spade perform this.
Definitely "A" Material. Tip: I you wet your sponge balls and FREEZE them....... You can cut or carve them more evenly. Not sure if this is mentioned in other posts (?)

Paul- I'll get back to you on that. You should theoretically be able to get them wet since it is permanent paint for clothing, but I don't know how it would affect puffing.
-Just tried it. I'll post a pic. brb

Here's one puffed and one not. They look and behave beautifully. And so far in practicing with the babies and the adults together the little ones skitter around like real bugs when I open my hand- they don't pop like a normal sponge; just kind of skitter around. Looks real! This might freak some people out. lol

And because the paint stripe holds the sponge tighter than ink, when the sponge expands it gives the wings a slightly sculpted look. You can't see it in this pic from the downward angle.

Theodore,
Cool. Thanks for the info. Did you just use a brush then?

No, it was even easier than that The bottle comes with a small hole already in the tip. You just point and paint. It was kind of a combo of painting/injecting since the sponge is absorbent. For 97 cents you cant go wrong! Walmart btw.
And I maybe used a 1/4 of the bottle if that.

Another sponge ball blast from the past that deserves revisiting is "Clones". Also easy to make up.

Clones was a Patrick Martin marketed effect where the sponges had googly eyes and little glues on noses. There was also an eye dropper that showed an orange liquid that you injected into your hand to make the first clone appear. I can't remember for sure but the eye dropper might have been used to suck a clone from one hand and injected into another as well. There was also a variation on it by Ron Bauer published in Genii called, "The Clones from Brazil". Interestingly enough, in that article he discusses and illustrates also cutting the balls in half to make lady bugs.

I hadn't visited this thread which I started in a while because I thought it had died. Instead it has become quite a hit. I'm pleasantly surprised.
I am shocked at how much the thread has advanced replete with brilliant ideas and photos of excellent craftsmanship. I really have to hand it to you guys! Let the joyous news of magical lady bugs be spread throughout the land!
