I am curious as to what a reverse sun and moon coin set is? I understand the Roger Krause used one in his routine called Soleil et Lune any info would be much appreciated...

Its basically a sun and moon coin that has a Silver shell with a c/s coin instead of a copper shell. So it would look like an ordinary silver coin when nested (instead of a copper one like the sun and moon would).

And if you have one of each I have a book of 18 routines For them! It's called " here comes the sun and the moon!"

Where can you purchase a reverse set - for a reasonable price? Meaning about the same as the regular "classic" Sun & Moon" set, which Johnson Magic sells for USD $25.00. I know that I could order a custom set made by one of the custom gaffers, but then I'd probably need to also order a classic set too, and my budget cannot handle that kind of outlay presently.
Anyone know if a reverse set matching a classic S&M like Johnson's is sold anywhere? Thanks! Jim |

Roy Kueppers makes great sun and moon sets at a reasonable price. The reverse sun and moon sets are $50 dollars including a copper and silver matching coin. Walking liberties are $115 and morgans are $255. The morgan one I got is great!

I had Roy make me a Sun and Moon soft Walking Liberty set with a matching ungaffed Walking Liberty half. He did a great job! Thinking of moving up to a Morgan size set next!
Customized greatly...

So would a standard C/S (English penny/half dollar) coin and an expanded half dollar [ work as a reasonable substitute for an actual reverse Sun & Moon set?

Karnak, for practice? sure. In real performance they are NOT the same at all.
There is another thread discussing how easy it is to pick out which coin has the [ on it from a set of 4. You really can't do that with a sun moon coin (made properly). A sun/moon when nested is invisible from all sides and angles. The only 'tell' you're going to get is if you don't line up the top and bottom faces to look like a regular coin, but you need to make a conscious effort to to realize if they're lined up or not. |

An exception to that MAY be that if you order a shell and C/S coin from one of the 'top' custom gaffers. Then it would probably be unnoticeable.. But generally Craig is correct, you have to order the sun/moon coin as a 'set'

Dentian - hmm that's not entirely accurate. A standard copper/silver is always going to be thicker (as thick as a standard coin) than the insert of a Sun/Moon or Reverse Sun/Moon. The insert on a S/M needs to be thinner to ensure that when nested in the [ it nests 100% flush and the [ provides COMPLETE coverage. With a standard copper/silver you would never achieve complete coverage of the [.
This isn't a function or feature of the top custom gaffers but an engineering and design concept. I can show pictures of some Lassen, Schoolcraft and Magikoins c/s, [ and s/m to anyone interested. I hope that helps! |

Ah right, that makes sense... I only have a C/S coin and expanded shell from Roy Kueppers (along with the sun and moon), and the shell fits over the c/s perfectly, but I guess that's rare..

That's why I asked about the availability of reverse sets. The Johnson S&M coin looks about perfect when nested; much more so than any regular exp. shell - even Todd's. You can do a nice coin roll with a S&M coin, as well as flip it up in the air without it separating at all.
guess I'll contact Roy and ask about getting it made. Thanks all! Jim |
