I'm curious to hear from anyone who performs Brent Brauns's Torched & restored. Do you prepare a complete deck of gaffed cards or just a few at a time as needed? Reason for asking is I attempted to utilize a couple of gaffed cards I made up several months ago and found that they did not separate but were completely stuck together. Has anyone had this issue and if so, what was your fix?

Great question. I've had exactly the same thing happen to me when I first started performing Brent's T&R. I would make up an entire deck which consisted of 26 gaffed sets of cards. Very easy, no forcing necessary. However, I come to experience that if I did not utilize all the gaffed cards quickly, any gaffed pairs become almost permanently stuck and not separable. I went back to forcing.

I haven't had a problem but I tend to go through the cards fairly quickly so they don't really sit around a long time before Gertrude Ng used.
I guess maybe just make up a few at a time instead of a whole deck. |

Sorry that was "getting used" not Gertrude....

When I use to do this effect before, since I wasn't performing a lot, I would just make up a few for the gig I was doing. I would just add one to the deck and do either a riffle f***e or a dribble f***e and just go from there.

I do it the way Bulla does. My true T&R worker is JM's "Asunder", in which there is also a flame involved (not to mention a smoking card when restored). I just cant say enough about it. The best, most practical, easiest T&R there is (IMO). Justin Miller gives it to you for $10.00 as an instant download. You WILL be performing it the same day.

One question, do you also have difficulties for the final unfolding in a pop ?
I do the snap but it only open vertically |

I only prepare a single gaff card at a time and use a force to get the card chosen. This occurs as part of a longer routine where I actually force an un-gaffed duplicate card which I do some other tricks with, ultimately tearing it up and throwing it away into a change bag as a bin. When I restore it I just bring out the gaffed card as the replacement (this is part of patter related to recycling, rubbish etc). I then note to the audience that I'm going to do it again, this time burning the card and, to make it harder, I'll get them to sign it. I then get them to sign it and "redo" the trick - this time using Torched and Restored's method - showing the restored card still has their signature. Perhaps not the best presentation, but it has worked for me and got some great reactions! It also avoids needing a full deck of gaffs!

Needless to say, I got a lot of practice, because it was not do-able without the cards sticking, leaving tape on the selection, or ripping off the back. My solution is to prepare only half the deck, make sure they select one of the gaffs and then continue doing the trick until I'm down to just a few cards. I haven't tried forcing but that is certainly a good way to go as well.

I too had this problem and ruined a couple decks of gaffs by storing them too long. So then I'd just make a few before a performance and force them. Although recently I've been using an idea from a Geoff Williams lecture to use the GAFF as the odd card during Chicago Opener. Do the opener followed by T&R. It kind of makes since to just have them sign and tear up the odd card because it doesn't go with or ruin your deck. Plus you've handled the GAFF freely during the preceding effect so it has no suspicion of being a GAFF. This makes for a very strong quick 2 trick set. Only downside is they can't handle the card to reveal the opener, you have to, but I don't think that really takes away from the effect.

I prepare mine on the spot/while performing by simply adding (on the sly) a piece of.....blutack.
The big thing is there is no need for advance prep. Couple minor changes in the handling but it works. |
