$300 is just too much. I won't buy.
And I don't want to help create a market where other books are priced that high either. |

I really don't think this is a get-rich scheme. But more importantly: This is half a century of wisdom, know-how, and insight distilled into what looks to be a beautiful set of books, authored by one of magic's best writers. It's a retrospective for one of magic's greatest minds. If you think that should cost no more than $50, then I don't know what to say. |

Idolatry is evidently an effective marketing strategy for certain audiences.

I agree with Tim. For me, $150 would have been the right price.
I think at $300, the margin is not so low. Kevin, if you set the price depending on the quality of the contents, you could price the Card College set at $4000 easily. Or Dingle’s book at $3000. in fact, there is no limit. |

And as I was reading the chapter’s titles, I really think this set will be hard to sell. There is not so much contents for the typical amateur magician. For that price, there is other better options IMHO.

With an initial printing of 1500 books, it'll be a looong time before these sell out at $300 each. Nobody's book can increase in value before that happens.
And it's not a limited edition, so they're free to reprint at any time. |

My profession is art (painting) So I have tons of expensive hardbound art books, I own also many collectors edition magic books. We know when a book is out of reach ! I love Johnny Thompson as magician, I love the Dai Vernon thinking that he has, I want this book very much, I have the money but I don't think that I will buy it. It is just too expensive even for a very rare book.

Arrived here in Brooklyn today. The full page photos are stunning. And the smaller informational photos are crystal clear. Slipcase, and signed by Thompson. I'm not saying the price isn't an issue, but if you were given this as a present, I think you would be very happy with it--and with the person who gave it to you.

Hello Everyone,
For what it's worth, Johnny will be doing a lecture at Magic Inc. in Chicago this coming Wednesday and Thursday (11th and 12th of April). After that, the book will be available at the shop for a short while for anybody who may want to have a quick look before buying, or who may want to save on shipping costs. They will be available in very limited supply, so please call ahead to confirm availability before making a trip to the shop. It is an absolutely beautiful production and a long time in the making. Even though the material seems easily digestible for amateurs and beginners, it is clear that Johnny did not hold back when it comes to sharing the finer subtleties of his work. Any serious student of magic would want to have a copy sitting on their night stand, to be studied in detail. The price is certainly a consideration, but not unheard of in the industry. Books selling in this price range have done little to affect the general magic market over the years, they are clearly outliers and remain as such. Case in point: when Vernon published the $20 manuscript in 1932. In today's dollar that comes up to about $337. Yes, his book was only published and sold to about 75-100 people, but it was also only 10 routines and this was the very first time he published a collection of his work. Unlike Johnny Thompson's work, you really didn't know what you were getting for your money. You can read the whole story of the $20 manuscript here: http://www.magicinc.net/earlyvernon.aspx Lecture information: https://goo.gl/vR7uZ2 To learn more about The Magic of Johnny Thompson: https://goo.gl/DE1SJ1 If anyone has any specific questions about the book let me know. I'll try to check back in in the coming days. |

Pedro, we live in another century, with much greater access to magic to everyone. When Vernon released the 20 $ manuscript that was not the case. Its not the same age anymore. It was just a simple paperback manuscript and the value were the secrets. Now you don't pay for the secrets (mainly) it is a very expensive book. Anyway I respect mr Thompson and his work but I don't want to give so much money for just one book, even if this book is Johnny Thompson’s .Of course we live in a free market but at the same time everyone can criticize how you cost your product.

First of all I admit I preordered the book for $250. That being said having reviewed my copy over the last few days I would not hesitate to buy it for $300. I have 100’s of Magic books and DVDs and this will go right up to the top of the list in terms of quality of production as well as magic presented. If you’re a colllector this is a first edition autographed by John. But forgetting that this is one of our best living magicians presenting his life’s work. I’m delighted with my purchase

Juliano,
Yes, there is more magic commercially available today, and we have global access to it. Scanning through the table of contents of the book shows you that the information contained in this book is not readily accessible elsewhere. Yes, there are several sources to learn the Malini Egg Bag, for example, but if you want to learn Thompson's handling, this is it. Same thing with his unique handling of dove productions. Many sources, but only one for Thompsons's. Maybe an analogy will help me make my point in a way that I can't quite articulate. I own a Nissan Sentra. That's a car I can afford. If I want to own a Bugatti Veyron I can either buy one or steal it. Borrowing or renting one will not lead to me owning it, so it will only give me a fleeting illusion of ownership. I can't afford to buy one, and personally I don't feel comfortable stealing it, so all I can do is not buy one. I imagine that this is an over-prized vehicle when it comes down to the nuts and bolts that put it together, but I also understand that the engineering that goes into developing this kind of product requires a far greater investment than the investment to develop my Sentra. If The Magic of Johnny Thompson came out for $300 and not a single copy was sold, then you know the book was over-prized. If they have an initial rush of sales but it dies out completely after reviews come out, then you know the book didn't deliver on it's promise of great material, curated and polished over half a century and presented exquisitely. If, however, the book comes out, people buy it and after reviews sales continue, then you know the material and the presentation were as promised. All we have left is to decide whether we personally want to own this material or not. Regardless of whether or not there is an overwhelming amount of other material out there. I guess time will tell. |

Sorry, everyone, but I feel compelled to put my 2 cents in here, so here goes........
I know Johnny Thompson, and he is a friend of mine. Johnny is, in my personal opinion, quite literally, a TREASURE HOUSE of The Art of Performing Magic, and is one of the Pioneers of the modern art form, literally opening the door for many of us........ I have seen previews of this book, and there is no denying that the content and quality of the material and the production quality, as well as the fact that it is Not just a book, but THE LEGACY OF JOHNNY THOMPSON in print means, to me at least, that the book is WORTH EVERY PENNY, and then some!!! I for one, will be buying this book and will be glad that I did! Pedro: This is Rick Morein.......I hope I can make it down there to see Johnny this coming week......I IDOLIZE that man!~ |

Pedro I agree with you! I didn't say that the book is overpriced.Iam sure it has high quality production standards.I said that Iam criticizing the price for a single title (even are two books). Because it is the only J. Thompson’s book in the magic community, Iam sure many people wanted to have his work but they can not afford the price. My post has nothing to do with the huge respect that I have to mr Thompson. Because of this respect iam so mad because I wanted the book.

I received mine Saturday and just got around to opening the set this evening and Wow! It was definitely worth the wait. Beautiful quality all around. Everyone involved in the production of this book set did just an absolute superb job. You can tell everyone deeply admires and respects Johnny's contributions to the art of magic and therefore, gave 110% and it shows in the quality of the photos, paper stock, binding/covering, just everything is an A+. I would say without a doubt, pick this up while it is still available. Thank you to all the folks at Magicana (David, Karl, Julie & James), Jamy Ian Swiss, Teller, Levent and an extra special 'Thanks' to Johnny & Pam.

I rather bet this set will sell less than 300 dollars in the future.
