I am going to be playing a Middle East sorcerer in a special event coming up. The time period is 2,000 years ago.I am going thru props and looking for effects that would somewhat match that era. e.g. rope tricks, fire magic, cups & balls, shell game, etc. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

There was a trick in the Ali Bongo book about divining an image drawn in a tray of sand. The idea is that sand was used in some Middle Eastern countries to tell fortunes.

I did a similar show long ago and the hit was Patriotic Chips (Tarbell) using colored stones and baskets, followed by Birds of a Feather. Also Afghan Bands with my turban cloth.

Try using a wooden Ball Vase and "distress" the unit. Call it a small burial urn and place something it (ex. Lavender Seeds) that provided comfort to the deceased as they transition to the spirit world. Then make a ball appear or start your routine.

Making props look old or authentic - I have been more into making things look authentic than aging but depending on the item aging can be a good effect too and add to the realism.
I modify things to change their look and occasionally make something and occasionally age something. Ed Solomon mentioned above was big on modifying and making things and VERY good at it. He explains some of his basic how to's in some of his books. I think you can find about aging and distressing cards on the internet. Sometimes you have to experiment at least until you have practice at doing modifications. I think perhaps only 15 per cent of bizarrists make and modify things but there is an additional joy and satisfaction in doing so. I miss Ed who I was in regular email contact with - and I was surprised after he died at how many people he was in contact with -scads. He was an influence on many performers and entertainers - me included. |

You can use tea, coffee, or balsamic vinegar to "age" paper: Get some parchment resume paper, soak it or apply the fluid and use a hair dryer to remove the moisture. Avoid heat guns, they can catch fire. You can treat the edges by brushing "Distressing Ink" on with a cotton ball or sponge. Use rubber gloves. This is an easy way to get ancient looking paper that you can use to make scrolls, signs, ancient looking notebooks or journals, etc.
