Tom, it is a good thing I have been listening to your post over the years. If I did not, I would probably be homeless right now.

Mike, you will never be homeless as long as I'm around. If it comes down to it, I'll send you a nice cardboard box to sleep in.
But seriously, I want you to know that I have really enjoyed watching you grow your business over the past few years. You have certainly come a long way, especially the past few months, and I know it hasn't always been easy going. You have worked hard for it and you need to pat yourself on the back. You earned the success the ole fashion way, you worked for it. You asked the right people the right questions, you listened, and more importantly, you took action. Like they say, "you reap what you sow," and it looks like your crop is finally coming in. You did well Mike. Keep planting those seeds. Tom

Dynamike, it looks like you are getting some of the best publicity you can get. You don't need to read or get any programs, just keep doing what you are doing. You may be the expert and don't know it. You publicity in the last few weeks is more then most, if not all magicians, around.

This is the thing, as I wasn't going to post as I didn't want it to seem that I was picking on Mike. As I have said many times before, it is easy to get in the newspaper or on radio/t.v. I could likely go to any entertainer in the country that has a professional, solid act and get them media coverage almost instantly (depending on the timetables of the specific media). That's not a big deal and is not impressive. As a matter of fact, that should be part of every performers promotional efforts to their business anyway.
The key is how to do these media apperances and make them pay-off for you. How to monetize them. Otherwise they are only an ego-boost or something to include on your website or promo. Truth be told, most do not know how or what to do to monetize media appearances. Even before that they don't know how to use and work the media to their benefit and advantage. They typically just go on these and are like a deer in headlights. They are stiff, they don't know what to do or say and they almost always resort to the absolute wrong thing - performing magic in these segments. This becomes the focus of the media piece and does little for you in the terms of benefits. Most typically perform poorly given the unfamiliar and often intimidating atmosphere, constraints and performance environment. I've learned this the hard way trust me. I blew my first major network appearance terribly. However, I have since learned that getting media coverage and publicity will do little or nothing on it's own, but it is up to you as to learn how and what to do with it to receive measurable dividends. On the other hand, once I better understood this, I have done a television appearance that with 24 hours has me double my asking price while receiving offers from five countries. In one television appearance I went from being a regional performer to being offered work nationally and internationally. Media is a performance market just like any other performance market - corporate, colleges, cruise ships, trade show, schools, fairs & festivals, theaters, etc. Most fail to understand this and until one does, they will not likely get the true profits from their media appearances. |

After reading Mindpro's post I believe I will benefit from thoroughly answering these following two questions for myself the next time I embark upon media attention: " Why am I doing this?" and "What do I want to get out of it?" While I previously thought I was already doing this, I now realize so much more could be done that would have benefitted me. With respect to Dynamike's recent media events, I am very impressed. I do agree though that he will need to really consider ways to optimize his exposure. I recall a recent post from Danny Doyle on a thread about Dynamike's website. He said the following: "Right on the front page you have a cool logo, some FANTASTIC pics of you at the White House and you on Judge Mathis. Killer landing page. I need not look much further to know you are qualified to do my kids party. I would make my decision pretty quick and I would hire you based on that almost alone". While this was a compliment, I recall thinking to myself " man - shouldn't it be worth more than that? I mean there is nothing wrong with Birthday shows, but I see Dynamike having potential to book high end gigs paying many times what birthdays pay. His show plays big and he has a lot of personality. So I believe what Mindpro says really makes sense, in that how Dynamike leverages the media exposure in a strategic way should allow him to perhaps enter new markets and comand a higher dollar for his bookings. |

On Jun 27, 2014, insight wrote: This is an area I'm covering in a project I have been currently working on, but it getting so extensive it may end up becoming its own project. On the most basic level as a starting point the two questions charliecheckers posed is an excellent starting point: - Why am I doing this - What is the intended purpose or do I want to get out of it? Wven at this most basic level it is something that practically 100% of those that get their first media attention fail to realize or even consider. Some until after the piece, while others not even at all. First one must get over the initial "coolness" or ego-feed and plan it out exactly how you want it to go. Most do not even know or think about this. Then you need to understand the medium and play to the medium. again most do understand or realize this either. Once you have the answers to these questions then your must determine how to execute and attain these answers. You want to try to walk the line between what they (the media source or the event or reason you are getting the media segment) want, need and expect, and what you want need and expect. This is step one on its most basic level. When I had my radio station it always amazed me how many guests we would have on the air that didn't know, do this or even think about this. You must break it down as it will not happen by itself. Your wants and needs will likely be different than theirs, so it can get tricky yet quite exciting and purposeful. That's all I'll say for now, but trust me there is so much more as this is only media on its most basic level. While I agree with charliecheckers sentiments about Mike and his website and his media appearances, I will refrain from offering my thoughts on this other than to say all of this could be utilized to be much more, which were my initial thoughts too. Remember, media can work for you or against you. Mike has so much he could gain from all of this but perhaps he only wants the local kids stuff? That's fine if that's the case but he has several uniquenesses, that I'm sure he thinks works against him, that if I was managing him would be exactly what I would use to his advantage. We each have to find and decide our own direction, but sometimes others can see more potential in us than we see in ourselves, while other times we see more in ourselves that in reality is truly there (not Mike, just as a general perspective). I've always taught that you must operate from a position of reality and complete honestly. Many performers can't even do this as a first step. Btw, I disagree with Danny about Mike's landing page, especially the first fold. In my opinion he's listening to too many (or the wrong) gurus. I'd make one simple adjustment that I think would make a big difference for him and the kids/family market he serves. This is one of the things I often see here, is that advice is given without actual consideration for the markets one is targeting and their profile customer. I'm sure Mike doesn't want advice from me, but for what I know of his site it's nice but could be slightly tweaked to offer more in the first fold. Just an opinion. |

I will be releasing PROFESSOR SLIM KING'S COMPENDIUM OF RADIO MAGIC. It's about a decade of fun and games on the radio and allows you to glean thousands of dollars in free publicity. It's totally up to you how many radio shows you'd like to do. I would suggest something like this. Book a show in a certain area (Could be your home town)... Book a few shows on the local radio. Perform the shows remotely from your home or wherever you happen to be (I've done shows from Disney before)... They will be blown away .. so then book a show IN STUDIO" on the morning of your performance ..or Friday if you perform on a weekend ..Show's permitting (I have "appeared" on a Saturday show before) .... This is a great way to get FREE PUBLICITY!!!!

Charlie let me explain. You are WAY over thinking my compliment.
Mike is a family entertainer. This is the main focus and what he is highlighting. He shows this very well on this web page. This seems to be the goal. Showing him with kids at the White House showcases this. If a person wants to do other markets then have other web pages. A catch all web page where you claim to do it all is confusing. It reminds me of a guy came into the magic shop with his new business cards. Claiming to do everything from restaurants and kids parties and illusion shows mentalism hypnosis readings and comedy magic. The funny part was he had the nerve to put "etc".

It looks exactly like the same picture any tourist visiting the White House can snap. Him on the outside of the fence with the house behind. Surely he has some performance shot of him performing on what I'm guessing was the front lawn. I would use those. Otherwise it just looks like "magician Dynamike visited the White House." Show that he actually performed there. Or perhaps use this show along with a performance shot to show he actually performed there. Or better yet any video. Surely he had those shots or there was a WH photographer there that does. Upon relooking at the photos he posted on page one of this thread I like the picture with the rings as a much better shot. Of course with the added and enhanced Presidential Seal it would look great. |

Mindpro, I agree that pictures can lead the thinking. But words can spell it out plain:
"Kid Specialist Dynamike (shown below entertaining at the 2014 Easter Egg Roll at the White House) enchants children and adults at all types of parties and venues including:" I think Danny is right. You, and Charlie both, are looking at it from a different angle. I think Mike is using his publicity exactly as he should. It tells the world that he is a "trusted" entertainer that entertains family/kids in a big time way. It's working, it's paying off. In his area, Mike is the Man. My suggestion would be to just keep on keeping on. Could it be improved, sure everything can, but you should never complain about, or turn down good publicity, especially when its free. You take it all and then you can pick and choose what you want to use. The more you have the more news worthy you become. Tom
