I feel sorry for mentalists like Jack Curtis.
I'll also add Looch, Iain Dunford and Sean Waters into the mix. Anyone who isn't the flavour of the month, who just keeps plugging away doing good-- and occasionally great-- work. But for reasons clear to any teenager, they're just not considered "hot". ...and these are very handsome guys! But they're reliable, steady fellows that you can count on. The ones that you turn to when the sexy ones with the tattoos and the haircuts break your heart with their dual reality and their psychological forces-- and they will break your heart ladies, make no mistake. And so at the risk of ***ing this DVD with moderate praise I'll say this: Distorted Visions is a pretty good DVD with material that you will almost certainly use if you perform for real people on any kind of regular basis. Amnesic Transpo A (business) card transpo with a mental twist. This embodies the strengths and weakness of the DVD in general I think-- It's a good premise, but it doesn't quite escape the gravitational pull of Mental Magic. It's a fun effect but whereas Patrick Redford's Amnesia card effect plays for keeps, this one just plays like a really fun trick. Floral Destiny Again, I see performers using psych forces to make amazing effects that might crash and burn... this uses the same but plays it safe. It's a good effect that becomes a little bit better with a hit. This is where I would rather err on the side of Burning. Extra Subliminal Persuasion This is the one that all the boys are speculating about. It's a good solid effect. And probably the one I would use-- but without the ESP cards. Blank 2.0 A kind of CAAN with a kicker. I can see how this plays well for Jack... and would probably play well for me but I already have my BD kicker routine. Law of Attraction A living and dead test-- I didn't know anybody but Docc Hillford still did actual Living and Dead tests. This is one one of them... The reactions from his audience were very strong. Silver Lining This is a Which Hand effect that bears an uncomfortably close resemblance to Andrew Gerard's Accuracy, structurally it's an identical effect. That said, it's a strong routine that has lots of room for the performer to make it his own. Reading back this little review to myself I feel badly because of my lack of hyperbole. It isn't "amazing" it's only very good. There are no "Holy Grails" or "WTF" moments. Just reliable techniques and a few "Whoa!"s I'll also add that although I won this DVD in a contest and didn't buy it, I would have bought it based on Jack's "Distorted Thoughts" book that I bought a couple years back and enjoyed. We all have phases that we go through about what excites us as we go through this art-- I've been performing a lot of shows (as opposed to one off cool effects for friends) and I have to say I appreciate the Jack Curtis's out there who are sharing reliable premise-based effects that can be worked. A sincere thank you to all you guys.

It's funny... Silver Lining also reminded me a little of your pendulum bit in Imaginary Mediumship, too.

Waaaaay too much Bromance going on in this thread....
Besides, I happen to know that Dmoses does indeed have tattoos, in fact, he has a tattoo index! It's a little known fact that he has 'outs' for any card, MOAB as well as an uncanny likeness of a Gray Elephant in Denmark (and it's not what you think). e |

Many, many nice touches to easy effects that no one sees coming. Great material!

Distorted Visions by Jack Curtis - Review
I have had this DVD for a while now but only got around to using the effects at strolling gigs in the last couple of weeks. Now fully road tested (with the exception of Silver Lining) I can say, they rocked! Paul's review at the top says what needs to be said. The two business card effects stood out for me. The classic two card transpo is the effect that got me into magic. Jack's 'Amnesic Transpo' has given this gem new life for the mentalist. The reaction was just like that of the participants on the DVD, they see the hammer blow coming a few seconds before the reveal, it won't compute and then bang, shudder, shock. Thanks to Jack for giving this new life. Law of Attraction uses two simple principles familiar to most mentalists. Don't overlook this one. With the subtleties suggested on the DVD, this gets an emotional reaction every time. Synchronicity without the magic cheese. Although I have not performed Silver Lining yet, I will be very soon. Killer prediction effect. The production values are strong. The performances enjoyable. The teaching clear. The effects seal the deal.
