The Wizards' Journal #27 will be all about various projects that can be built from thin (1/16th inch) Bass wood without using power tools. Instead, cutting is done with a razor knife and metal ruler, parts are assembled with masking tape just long enough for the wood glue to dry. These light weight props can be used in shows as is, or you can use them as models for building stronger and more advanced models from hardboard, plywood, or Plexiglas (and power tools, of course). The first project is my Die Box Combination, which was built by Qua-Fiki in less than a week, photographing every step of the way to explain how it is done.
Next project "Drawer Box Mania" shows how to build two new types of Drawer Box, plus the traditional Drawer Box for "stick-in-the-muds".

Once a Wiz Kid, always a Wiz Kid. I even have a Wiz Kid shirt of my own. That's because the name "Wiz Kids, Inc." is also a company name, and now that Qua-Fiki is an adult, he is serving on the board of trustees and teaching real live kids how to become "Wiz Kids." Thanks for being a loyal supporter and trusted friend, Cliff.
P.S. You can watch him grow up HERE: http://wizkidzinc.com/Qua-Fiki/Qua-Fiki-Fans.htm

Hi Jim
I've purchased quite a few of the Wizard Journal downloads in the past and I have to say that they are always well produced and very thought provoking. Love 'em! keep up the great work!

The Drawer Box plans have been released as item 2 in The Wizards' Journal #27. This is not your grandfather's drawer box, but something new that can be handled by a helper from the audience and can be taken completely apart as shown in the photo. It can be decorated as a critter, such as Julian Mather's "Nellie the Pig" or my simplistic Smilie Face. It can even be made to look like a traditional drawer box, but why would anyone want that?

The Clown Bus has been a lot of work, but also a lot of fun to build. If you don't cut out the windows of the bus, it can be built much easier, but what's the fun of that? The look on the faces of the kids when they see the formerly empty bus filled with clowns and plastic animals is worth the extra work.

I went through several versions of "improving" the old 1933 silk cabby before I hit on this Easy Peasy version. It uses 1/4 inch wood, and so needs a a coping saw or better yet, the X-Acto(r) saw which vibrates the wood less. The holes for the clear plastic mailing tube take time and patience without using power tools, but, yes, it can be done and using this Mis-Made Flag Crate solves the problem many have with overusing the change bag to perform the flag trick. This crate can be used for other purposes, but it is best at transforming silks from one to another.

The Roy Benson Style String Sticks took more time than anticipated because I had to order the string from Hong Kong ... before discovering that my local fabric store carries the exact same string. Anyway, it's done and on-line as I type.
Also, Qua-Fiki and I collaborated on a Dog Marionette for busking. At first I thought it should have a special section of its own on The Magic Nook, but it was pointed out that, after all, I had used no power tools even for making the Fire-Hydrant Lota or the Dog-Carrier case, so it was accepted into the Kitchen Workshop Issue #27 of The Wizards' Journal. Because I like challenges, I'll work on the Bouncing Blocks A Libre next instead of the boring Hippity Hops and the Square Circle.

I've bought a few of the articles on themagicnook.com and I second the opinion - it's well made articles that are very useful. I just want to chime in that I've found 3 mm mdf board to be easy to work with. It can be cut with a razor knife and a metal ruler (all though it takes a few cuts to get through) (mdf is maybe called hard board in the US. It's similar to masonite but is smooth on both sides). Anyway, keep those good articles coming Jim

The Bouncing Blocks A Libre is finished, and we made it in a size that is easier to transport and perform (with 2 inch cubes and a 12.5 inch tall tube - no internal mechanism needed, just like the original P.T. Selbit model). It requires more precision cutting and gluing than most of the other Kitchen workshop projects, and we use a paint first technique that is unlike the other projects. Qua-Fiki and I are both happy with the results.

The set looks great. I love the numbering style.

It's done with a laser-cut stencil which cost about $12, but it was worth it so I can make a lot more things with fancy French-style numerals. The sources for all materials like this are given in the e-Book so you don't have to go hunting for everything.
