I wanted a set of Stocks of Zanzibar somewhere between "too small" and "too big" (per Goldilocks). I bought a set of plans and modified them to my liking ("just right"). I'm planning to use it with David Ginn's routine as explained in his "Professional Magic For Children." Here is a photo.

I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant. Visualize Whirled Peas! |

Nice job.
I'm always surprised, though, how few magicians extend the design to include wrist holes, like a classic pillory.

Thanks to all for the good words.
Steve: The plans I purchased (I did not completely stick to them) included wrist stocks mounted on the sides near the head hole, but I felt that it might slow down the routine that I am planning on using. I have also seen a drawing with a handcuff type restraint on the sides. My intention is not to present this as a serious escape per Houdini, but rather more as comedy and entertainment with a dose of mystery. Those of you who know the Ginn routine will understand what I mean. I don't know if it can stand alone as simply an escape. Maybe another performer can pull it off in a serious manner but I don't believe I can. That is not to say the wrist stocks cannot be included in the Ginn routine, but one would have to add more explanation to the routine as well as more work for the performer, therefore probably slowing down the pacing.

I am definitely familiar with David Ginn's routine, and that was the reason I bought the prop years ago when I did. I no longer have it, but it is a good routine and I understand how wrist holes would likely bog things down. The routine is not an escape as much as an "Assistant's Revenge" type effect, using a kid from the audience.

The wrist holes in my version of the stocks (Wizards' Journal #18) are used as "handles" by the kid from the audience, and so don't slow the routine down at all. As described, the helper is put in the stocks to demonstrate how difficult it is to escape, but only his head is inserted. I use the excuse that I've lost the keys for the padlocks on the wrist holes (each has its own separate padlock). Then when the helper "escapes" and I am found fully locked inside both the head and wrist stocks, it's more of a mystery, and now I apparently have to do a genuine escape to get out of the contraption without any keys. How it gets resolved is included in the e-Book- I won't reveal it here, but the whole routine was designed to comply with the advice of John Novak as expressed in his December 1977 article in Genii Magazine regarding escapes performed hidden from view of the audience. It is the child who makes the escape and I who am trapped by my own clever prop and need to be assisted in getting out.
I was glad to see that Terry followed my advice on removing the top of the usual frame that surrounds this prop, but disappointed that he didn't try the "chainless" solution I provide with the plans. Still, he did an excellent job and the whole point of "Do-It-Yourself" is just that- make the prop fit you and not someone else.
