I do not own Greg's RA but I have spoken with Max and he's filled me in on the situation. It's always a fine line between a 'rip off' and a warranted improvement. I can tell you Max is furious that it's a rip off. While there is no doubt a difference between needing the spectator to speak the words out loud vs. getting a silent thump, the thinking here is virtually identical. In essence, Greg just applied his technology (that he uses on several apps) to Max's original and very well thought out concept. This is along the lines of stealing a proprietary old school phone design and saying you have the right to do that because this "new" phone is wireless. Greg, if you're reading this, I think it's clear as day that you should have received Max's blessing before releasing this. According to Max, you reached out to him and he said no. You disregarded his wishes and moved forward anyway. There's a word for that behavior: unethical. This isn't a hobby for Max. He makes 100% of his income from magic. What this tells me is that Greg doesn't have any respect for proprietary ideas. Nor does he care about Max's well being.
Let me repeat: Max said no to joining forces with you and moving forward with this idea. So against his wishes you went at it alone. At the very least, I think you should offer Max the consolation of putting his name on this and share the profits. I don't know how you could live with yourself otherwise. I've only heard one half of this story, so I'm sure we'd all be happy to hear your side of it, Greg. But all evidence tells me you are in the wrong here. Greg I've known you for many years. You sell yourself as a nice, solid, stand up guy. So live up to it, please. Brian Platt

In my brief interactions with Max as a consumer, and all the stories I've heard about him, he's truly an exceptionally nice person and stand up guy. To hear that he's "furious" clearly means something is not right here based on his character. I welcome ACAAN methods using technology, but the "card stats" approach is brilliant way to justify introducing a phone/tech into the mix and that credit is all due to Max. And for the record, Max's version also works with a spectators phone- it's not just an app.

I have found both guys to be great to deal with. Prompt and helpful in every way. I can't pretend that I don't want this issue to be sorted as I do think Greg's addition is an exciting one. And it's certainly an app I would be delighted to own in addition to Max's.

Hey guys this happens all the time. Unless there is a patent or copyright, it's free enterprise and even then it means very little as one only has to look at golf equipment. If the Giants can't protect their merchandise magicians have no chance. I've known Max a very long time and use Cardstats. I also consider him a friend. The problem as I understand it is Max said no. Greg feels he has made significant changes from the original that in essence makes it different although the effect is the same. An attorney could argue both points hence ethics and morals. I would encourage Greg and Max to respond to this in a civil manner. I had ask the IBM many, many years ago to deal with ethics and they refused which is why I canceled my membership.
"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "

Max's version has been out for a few years now. It's not as if Greg has released his at the same time. I like the fact that me, as a consumer, now has a choice. I didn't really care for Max's version, but I really like Greg's. Plus it's a one off payment. IMO there's enough of a difference to allow this to come to market. Count me in.

Let me start by saying Max and I are friends and either through our phone conversations or our personal meetings we always have mutual respect and admiration of each other's thoughts and products.
I just left a message on Max's answering machine so that we can talk about this. Max is my friend I don't want him to be "furious" about anything I've done. About a year ago I reached out to Max about doing RA. In the phone conversation Max agreed that the wireless transmission of the information from the website would be a great addition to MACAAN. In my memory of our phone conversation, Max never said no to me developing RA. In this year a LOT of work has gone into RA. There are many innovations that had to be developed to make this effect work seamlessly. For example, in the demo video you might have noticed that after Scott puts in his card, the website has a little difficulty going to the next page. That pause is fake. It's designed to let the magician have enough time to do "the work". The above is one of many examples of new ideas and technologies that had to be developed to make RA work. As I stated in the first post of this thread, I completely acknowledge that RA was inspired by Max's MACAAN. I just have to wait for Max to call me back. Greg Rostami |

Greg,
In your call to me you said you wanted to integrate MACAAN into supa thump. I said It seemed like a nice idea but I didn't want to hurt my sales of MACAAN by releasing another version to confuse my customers. There was never a discussion about you putting out your own version to compete against mine but that hasn't stopped you before. Best of luck in your "new, updated, improved, enhanced, ground breaking" version. "Ipredict" you will never stop and please don't bother contacting me. Justify all you wish. Enjoy profiting off of my work (again). For this reason I am no longer going to release another app for the magic community. All of the additional ideas I have will be released for public use. I may also drop the prices of every other magic app I have released in the past as few magicians support originality and I am through throwing my hard earned money and racking my brain to create original content out only to take financial losses for the magic communities benefit because they all think apps should be "cheap" since they are not tangible assets. There will be no other post from me about this. Max

But I'm also certain that you've had many of your fans praise your amazing work. I have to constantly remind myself of all the positive comments about my products and forget the lack of respect from others. I'm certain that we can come to an agreement. Greg |

I have just still to figure out how to use it with only one me...zed deck. Jan

Jan,
Max explains the single deck version on his penguin lecture. That is the one I use, ironically with a handling closer to Greg's! |

Max also has a MACAAN DVD that explains the different handlings, tips, tricks, etc.

Thanks! Got it meanwhile by myself (little thinking doesn't hurt...) and I had a chat with Max . If someone uses a MD I would share an idea with you (Max knows about it) which streamlines the performance. Besides that the deck (only one of course and from the very beginning on the table) is completely unprepared, not even any c...ts cards. Jan

For those of you who are fans of Memorized Decks (like my buddy Jan), you may have noticed that the stack that was used in the video of RA is unknown.
My favorite stack is one that we made called "Statistics". When performing ACAAN, you ideally want the effect to happen without ever cutting the cards. Since cardodds.net has over 77,700 samples, the Statistics stack places all of the most popular cards in the most popular numbers. For example, the ace of spades is in position 13 because: The odds of Ace of Spades is : 1 in 11 The odds of #13 is : 1 in 16 With the Statistics stack you are slightly increasing your odds of getting their card truly at their number without having to cut any cards. cheers, Greg |

Greg it looks as though you've done it again....created another brilliant effect! MACAAN was a great method using technology to solve the acaan plot. I didn't like that multiple decks were used though, and that is was only a subscription (unless you paid a lot more). Is the intro $24.99 for indefinite use of the app?

MACAAN can be used with one deck.

Touche TuneHV. My memory is somewhat of a blur of macaan. I purchased the subscription version of it years ago when it was first released. I like how with Greg's method even less is told about the choices though...a bit more decieving of the magician not knowing the number or card "thought of".

I'm not sure I follow- in MACAAN the magician does not know the number or the card either. Only difference is with Greg's the spectator doesn't have to say what the statistics are.

TuneHV, that's what I meant, that with macaan the statistics needed to be read to magician. Whereas nothing has to be read out loud or shown to the magician with Greg's. Not a huge issue, but it is a nice touch.
