Hey everyone - I'm new around here.
I've been into Sideshow for my entire life, and in the last year I've gotten very interested in finally learning some things myself. I've seen some low-key performances locally, featuring things like human pincushion, bed of nails, and grind shows. I gogo danced for some friends' band, and we had two performers doing more tame fire acts (like hula hoops and batons) outside. However, I really want to learn fire eating/breathing and sword swallowing in particular, and I haven't been able to find someone experienced to supervise/be a mentor of sorts, so I don't end up killing or maiming myself while trying to learn. In fact, the only sword swallower I've ever heard of around here is Angelo the Blade (which is another reason I'm so into it - I'd be one of the few, if not the only one, here). Anyone else here that's local, and willing to help me out? Also - yes, I'm aware of the dangers, commitment, and physical obstacles involved - I've been researching ever since I decided I wanted to learn. And since I understand this isn't something that can be learned by reading, I decided to post here. |

While it may be a drive, it is worth it. See about Harley Newman's Oddity U class.
http://bladewalker.com/www.bladewalker.com/Oddity_U.html Harley has had international students travel to take his class. |

Thank you very much for this - since there aren't really any specific details on the page, I emailed Harley.
I hope we can eventually manage to work something out, since regardless of where it is, I can't make it there by tomorrow for the current class haha. |

Ive taken Harleys class,im fom the UK and can say without a doubt its worth every penny, you wont only learn the skills you learn how to present it and Harley gives you all his years of experiance and advice even after the lessons have ended, plus if you are very lucky you get to try his pancakes two thumbs up from me

Great! I'm glad to hear from someone with firsthand experience.
I'm hoping to attend in June, but it will all depend on my financial standing then, of course. Where does he hold the classes? |

I went in June this year. He has the classes in his barn behind his house, a very nice timber framed barn. The classes are great. You will learn a lot. There is nothing like having someone right there with you to teach you. Books and DVD's are good but some of this stuff is dangerous so having someone with Harley's experience is very comforting. The hospitality he showed to us was great. Can you tell I liked it?

That sounds fantastic! Thank you guys for sharing your experiences - it's definitely pushing me more toward this class.
I really hope to be able to attend. What state is it in? I live in the northern part of South Carolina, so I'll need to account for travel expenses while planning. |

I'm from NC but all the people I know who do side show stunts are self taught and I don't think they teach anyway.
