Hi guys
I am having a small problem with my hindu sand routine. The problem occurs when I try and retrieve the seemingly dry sand from the water ..I cant seem to pick up the whole load of sand that I poured in. I have tried many different ways to pick it up in the water but the sand load just breaks in to many pieces leaving me with lets say half the sand to what I first poured in to the water . I hope this makes sense and I hope someone could please give me some tips on what I'm doing wrong. many thanks Luke cook. |

Luke are you using waxed sand or the magic sand like sold in stores??

Im currently using the regular sands of the desert kit ( sand that's bought in stores) But I do own the waxed version also ..I like the waxed sand but for me there is something more impossible about pouring the sand in to the water than placing it in like you do with the waxed .
Thanks Luke |

I have always used the wax sand myself,,, sorry I cant help you with the other version of sands.... usually with the wax version, sometimes I would have to melt in a bit more wax with the sands to get them to clump and not absorb water... sorry I cant help you my friend. I hope someone chimes in soon to help you.. best of luck

Have you looked at the Pendragon method. It is pretty slick. Available on their l&l pub dvds

From the olden days (1959-60) when I was doing this regularly -- I always used waxed but also -- as I moved to bowl had grain pouring from my hand. The next thing is to reach in and gently stir before you rush in and complete the act.

Has anyone tried the "hybrid" sand?

Bill is right. All sand is not the same! I only trust sand that is specifically made for this type of magic routine. The Magic Depot is the best source that I know of. They offer waxed sand, synthetic sand, and "hybrid" sand. There are pros and cons to each type. I have not tried the hybrid sands. I have been hoping to find some reviews from pros that have actually used it so I can make some comparisons before I buy.

Given that you have decent sand, it sounds like a technique issue to me. Sand has to be placed in the water quickly while still clumped together, not poured. Then it needs to be squeezed together underwater. When you take it out, You sort of have to gently toss it up under water to get you hand under it. Before you pull your hand out, the sand needs to be all the way in your hand, palm up. Once you get your hand under it, have your glass or bowl ready. You have to pull your hand out quickly and move toward the glass. Some will come out but the better you get at it the less sand you will spill. There is definitely a technique to it. I do this A LOT so PM me if you have any questions.

Seems there must be different methods to doing this trick. In another thread, they mentioned that the sand was sealed in a wax jacket.
Don't tell me that someone on YouTube is spreading the wrong method again. Originally, I read it was an opaque bowl, now these days they use a clear bowl, I would guess because of the clear to black water effect, then from black to clear again. I guess it depends on the instructions that is supplied with the model you purchase. I remember a trick like this being advertised in Tannen's Catalog. It used confetti instead of Sand, no water. It came with a rectangle box. I believe it was called Snow Time in China. |

Jay Mattioli sells a setup for this called Sandz that is fantastic. The sand is excellent and the way he has incorporated getting the chemicals in for the water changes is practical and perfect. I perform it in every show I can.
Now on the subject of picking up all the sand, I don't pour. I do it the way Jay teaches on the DVD which is to fill your hand and then dump it in. It keeps everything together much better.
