Here I was going insane, trying to find fellow Christian Magicians.
a couple weeks ago at a mens meeting I was watching a guy sit by himself, I walked up to him and did a few close up bits that ended up with a table of people and this guy talking to them and connecting in. I told my mens pastor, hey I'm doing magic... he was like..... what kind, I'm like, you know the dark arts and stuff as a joke. I showed him a couple of things and blew his mind. we laughed, he called me a witch and said that they will burn me tonight. (all in fun clearly) to now find a network of Christians that are Magicians is amazing.

I've done one magic/Gospel show and it went over real well. They invited me back next year. I do have one concern, if you lead someone to Christ with entertainment don't you have to keep them with entertainment? If you use the Word all you need is the Word to keep them. I know we can make the message stick with magic in the minds of many but I still have a concern. Any words of wisdom?

They are saved by the grace of God.
if they are saved, the catalyst that got them to that point is redundant. it's the Power in the name of Jesus that makes the blind see and the deff hear. if our magic is the thing that gets a person over the line, than we have fulfilled the great calling that we are all commanded to do by God. EVERY perfect gift is from Above. Magic in what we do is a gift from God. it's a tool, a talent a blessing. when a person feels Gods power for the first time, it's not the magic we done, or the songs that got sung. it's that personal step to a relationship in Christ. the most powerful preaching in the world can save a person, but they don't require it to stay saved. the stressing on our behalf is making sure that person desires to seek and grow that relationship with God in their personal lives. maybe even if you have a web site, you put a blog up to help inspire that with devotions and prayers on it so they can follow you.

No one "is led to Christ" by entertainment, or preaching for that matter. They either believe the truths of Christianity or they don't. If they believe in entertainment they will need entertainment. If they believe in a pastor or teacher, they will need that pastor or teacher (precisely why Paul didn't baptize many people). If they believe Jesus, he is perfectly capable to keep them without anyone's help. If they are your converts, they need you. If they are God's converts, he can hang on to them. Either he will fail them or he won't.

Is it getting a call back? Is it being entertaining and liked? Did it have anything other than entertainment value? People are easily entertained. Did you challenge anyone? The most important thing from my point of view is to be the real deal. Do you invest time really studying and doing what you learn? Do you really believe the Bible is true to begin with? As entertaining as someone can be, we can still spot a phony a mile away. No one will take your message any more seriously than you do. If you take it seriously, you will pay a price. If you can't pay the price, don't get involved or you will be laughed at just as certainly as the phonies in your group are laughed at. You may want to consider also the character of the people in the FCM. You do have to overcome that. "A person is known by the company he keeps." Take to heart that "bad company corrupts good behavior." The performing arts can be a great tool for spreading a message. Just don't make the tool more important than the message and you should be OK. |

Gospel magic in general serves many purposes including: helping point folks to the saving work of Christ (repentance and faith is prompted by the convicting ministry of the Holy Spirit: Mark 1:15, Luke 5:32; 13:3; 24:47; John 17:20; 20:31, Acts 5:31; Romans 1:16 and many more verses) and then encouraging those already saved toward love, service, exercising the gifts of the Spirit, knowing God and His Word, an many in many other aspects of knowing and applying Biblical Truth to our lives.
I always try to tie any programs I do with a local Bible believing church- an organized body of believers for the purposes of evangelism, nurture, fellowship and worship (Matt. 16:18; 18:17; Acts 2: 41-47, Gal. 1:2, Eph. 1:22-23 and countless other verses). The goal of Gospel magic the way I try to do it (but not always succeed) is not to just first do some fun tricks, and then right at the very end only/tack on at the end of the program some kind of goofy illustration that may be only barely remotely reflective of the great Truth of Scripture (e.g. "this red silk represents sin", this "blue silk represents heaven", "so lets watch the red silk turn blue", and "let's see if this guy gets to heaven" etc.). I know I am guilty of this, it's not good, and it's routines like that- that are not properly thought out well. The audience goes away with virtually nothing worthwhile. Much better in my own view is to have an "illustrated" and very specific truthful personal testimony how the work of Christ saved me/the Gospel magician and continues to this day to change/form every part of my life. That is the power of God unto salvation. Phoniness is not an option. As singer/songwriter Rich Mullins says in the excellent biographical movie produced on his life story (now on Netflix called "Ragamuffin"): the most important bottom line thing is (I believe Rich quoted the theologian Karl Barth?) "Yes, Jesus Loves Me". So simple and yet so profound. By the way, can I recommend the "Ragamuffin" movie?- an honest portrayal of a struggling co-beggar performer looking for the Bread of Life-a flick I heard someplace had only a total production budget of $500,000. You can also purchase the DVD of the movie online or at many Christian bookstores. The fellow/co-musician in the Jeep at the end of the movie with the Rich (portrayed by Michael Koch) was the same musician that was in the Jeep in real life. |

If you watch only 5 minutes of the "Ragamuffin" movie, watch it at the 1 hour 30 minute mark. True story of Rich listening to cassette tape from the late Brennan Manning (author of "The Ragamuffin Gospel"). Rich did not like to listen to tapes between venues, and it happened in real life as it is portrayed in the movie, including stopping the Jeep and his getting out crying.

I've always felt the illusions in my show build rapport with students on colleges and elsewhere that allow the tension and barriers that are often present on secular universities to fade away. Then when the show transitions into a very clear Gospel presentation, eg are comfortable with this random person they have come to see and hear the message of Jesus. These are students who may never elsewhere hear the Gospel. This whole notion of entertainment and keeping people entertained argument seems like a bit of a smokescreen. Are you entertaining? Great. Are you sharing the Gospel? Great.
The day and age we live in is so vastly different now in the way students and teens interact with others. The stat out there is that 70+% of students leave the church after high school.what are we doing to combat that? With our ministry we are in full time evangelism through illusion shows. We share the Gospel and see a harvest but we also plant seeds.this is why it's so important for us when we are at our home church and those others who are not full time on the road to invest in discipleship as well. Let's not focus on the, " you aren't doing right if people want you autograph" mindset . That's just kids today. The important thing is when a promoter tells me after the show that several students gave their lives to Jesus that night. The rest just falls away because that's why I do what I do. |

Doing magic tricks to lead into religion seems... I don't know... not the right path to go down if you want to be taken seriously? Because if you're seen as a trickster, magician, or someone who keeps secrets then I will always see you that way. It's hard to change hats once someone sees you a certain way.

Depends. I do "Gospel magic" literally every Sunday morning in "Kids Church." Every effect or illustration ties directly into a Scripture verse which I usually read before, during or after the "trick" is done. See www.ChristianMagician.org for many examples. The kids and teachers love it- and it is joy to come up with something challenging each week for use over a long period of time (and seen before the same group of kids). "Gospel magic" is well received in that type of wonderful repeat church setting.
Andre' Kole performed in cities all over the U.S. for many years: He first "earned the right to be heard" by performing initially in each show serious well done illusions- but then ended each program with his personal testimony/and/or sharing the Gospel (often using his famous "Three Ball" illustration). Christians are all "missionaries"- a mandate for all, not just a calling for some. For more on this, see Pastor J.D. Greear's excellent book on church growth entitled "Gaining By Losing, Why The Future Belongs To Churches That Send" (2015 published by Zondervan). |

I've used Gospel Magic along with other visual methods all over the world. It's effective and we've seen thousands give their lives to Christ because the message was clearly understood. Sorry, I dispute the claim that effective presentation won't lead someone to Christ. Romans 10:14-15 is a good place to start. Someone needs to be sent, to preach a message that's clearly understood, so people can believe and therefore call on the Name of the Lord.
If you want to learn how to effectively put together a Gospel magic presentation, Duane Laflin's 3 DVD series: "Art of Gospel Magic" is essential. |

I've done plenty of performances over the years for the kids church but I was really nervous when the Pastor asked me to perform something in the main service last week. Our church is fairly traditional and just weeks before one of the members had gotten in a rant about demon magicians so I was freaking out. I kept it all in prayer, asking for guidance on what to perform and how to present it. In the end I did the gypsy balloon and the reactions couldn't have been any better. They've asked me to do some more over the next few weeks. There's certainly a time and place for magic in ministry but as long as you use wisdom I don't see why it has to be one or the other. My main advice would be keeping the message at the forefront as much as possible. While adults can better understand the symbols and representations, kids struggle with that a little. The visual of the effect is usually what they walk away with so you want that to have a strong tie to the message. At the end of the day you want them going away with a better understanding of the gospel, not just thinking about silks changing colour. A lot of it will just come from experience though as I'm sure many above can attest to. Keep up the great work!

They use Music-Drama-Flannel Board-etc to illustrate the Gospel- So can Illusion(Magic??) be used to illustrate(I also include personal Witness). see 2nd Corinthians 4:1-2 - my Living translation Bible used the words"I"m Not here to TRICK YOU" (King James -"deception")- Which I usually begin my program with- - as said, befor (at 78+) Love to share effects - go to SEARCH put in 'russo' and then 'search - many effects (and personal comments if you want to wade through them L-O-L ) Happy CHRISTmas to YOU ALL - Ralph(russo)Rousseau
