This must have been out of circulation for a while, as it was recently listed as a new item by Hocus pocus. I bought it and am very impressed. I own a similar effect by Harries, also very well made but not nearly as deceptive as Astor Mental. Fine workmanship. Instructions are not very good, and a crucial crib-like feature is somewhat confusingly put together, but this should make no difference. You will figure it out in moments, and after you've performed the trick a few times you won't need the crib. This is good.

Unfortunatly, as clever as they may be, props like this suffer from the layperson believing that the prop is gimmicked (which it is). If it is not examinable, and it isn't, then the only logical conclusion is that it is gimmicked.

Michael Ammar asked me if he could refer to these three areas in his book (with full credit of course). I agreed but then he cut them at the last minute so I'm sharing them here. |

I've never had anyone ever reply that it's gimmicked. This may be because the way it's made. Because it's transparent, to the layperson, they don't question it. To them, it's not gimmicked because they can see through it.

I ordered one from HP last week and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival. I'll post my thoughts once it hits my mailbox and I work on it. Can't wait!

Apologize about the delay for a review but Astor Mental showed up the evening before my week long vacation to Bangkok, Thailand. Anyhow, this one is ingenious. Meticiously well crafted perspex board that looks incredibly innocent. I really like how Astor has allowed the effect to be immediately performed again and to have a different outcome. Even though many have been taught that you should NEVER perform the same thing twice for the same audience well, this effect should be considered the exception. Although the gimmicked board looks innocent you cannot let a spec handle it or it's workings will be evident to them within a few seconds. This effect is within the range from any novice on to pros as this one is all about presentation. It requires no memorization, no cribs etc. I will say that if you are color blind then performance may be an issue. I am very pleased with this purchase and I fell the production quality is very good and this will last a lifetime......if not I would still buy another.

I am incredibly impressed with the craftsmanship and quality of this product. Astor Mental is the best version of this principal that I have seen. I just got mine from Hocus Pocus and they have quite a few left.
I must concur with several others who’ve brought up the point that if you have audience member questioning your props (as this one seems show-bizzy, but straightforward), you’ve probably got something in your presentation that requires a good examination. This is the best one I’ve seen and I’ve performed this effect for years. I’ve had several magicians over the years like it so much and enjoyed being fooled by it so badly, that they didn’t WANT to know how it worked. That’s how strongly it affected them. Sometimes it’s just great to be fooled. I cannot more highly recommend Astor Mental to either the working professional or amateur magician who wants to add a first-rate trick to their repertoire.

We do stock them as well here at http://www.wonderwarehouse.com
I demoed this at the recent Magic live! convention in Las Vegas and was amazed how many working professionals (who usually buy a couple of silks) bought this after the demo and explanation...... |

Silly question...
Although the spectators do not see the faces as they are cleanly placed into the board, are all faces shown before hand? |

Yes all the faces are shown. In fact the spectator can examine the cards and freely choose which set of cards he wishes to use. I really like this effect.

I'm having a bit of a problem with the "sliding" on my unit being a little too loose. Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone with a solution?
|

The question is, how loose is too loose. I checked mine and they appear to be loose, but aren't they suppose to be? If they aren't loose, the prop won't work.

They need to be loose (completely free moving). You simply have to be careful with the angle of this prop. One 'mistake' was all it took for me to be extra careful!

My cards IN the apparatus are loose as well. One false move and you have to say goodbye. But the cards have to be loose! Stan Corrected is right. So just be careful. After some performances and handling around with ASTOR MENTAL I hope that the cards OUTSIDE will not get loose. Because that would be a serious problem.
