Not importantly, but Astor had birthday!
Mr. Astor is now 85 years old. Congratulations! |

Marc are you sure you are not confusing the German magician ASTOR (who is of Hungarian decent with the inventor of this trick (and the topic of this thead), who also goes by ASTOR but still lives in Hungry. He must have aged incredibly fast as his current picture does not look close to 85.....

Then that is a mistake of me.
It does not seem again. Sorry! |

I agree with all the praise about this effect, Greg showed me one at Abbotts and I bought it on the spot. Very nice and the repeatability part really makes this awesome.

Can this be used surrounded? How are the angles?

It can not be performed surrounded but is a great effect.

As far as surrounded, you really don't care if specs see the order of the first set of cards (the magi's set) as they are inserted, so no problem there. It seems like you could bring the unit close to your chest as you insert the second set, perform the necessary action while in this position, then bring it away from you and turn it around for the reveal. Just thinking out loud, but it seems like this would work... I'll have to try it out.

I was thinking about a street show environment. May be folks in back of me and there may not.

Surrounded might be tough, there is a lot going on with this trick. I think it's possible though.

There was something that looked very much like this from
either Tanner or Tannan? 15 - 20 years ago?
An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.

And it could not be repeated with different results. This "Astor Mental" makes the above trick obsolete! It's on my "wish list". |

Yes, one of the advantages of Astor Mental is that it can be repeated instantly with a different outcome (for magicians who may understand something)!! The quality is really good. It's not really recommended for street magic (who would take out such a board in the street where a minimal prop should be needed...?), but for close-up and parlour, even stage magic, it's really a great effect. I didn't know how it worked before buying it and I was really impressed by the thinking behind it!!!
Really, a VERY good effect! |

I just purchased this and I don't see how a different outcome is possible. Can you PM me and help me out here. Thanks.

This just looks to much like a magic prop to me. Even if they don't know how it is done, it appears to be an item bought from a magic shop.

If THIS looks too proppy, how else would a person construct a board to hold up matching cards so everyone could see? What would seem less suspicious?

Two points:
"It is proppy looking so the audience will think it's gimmicked." Will they? It's an empirical question, to be settled by observation. I've performed this many tens of times. In fact, no one thinks it's gimmicked. They are bowled over. End of story. About the outside cards being loose. This must be an isolated problem with a very few of them. Mine fit snugly. I couldn't shake them out if I tried.few |

This post says that it is snug and if he shook it the outside cards are snug. Others say it has to be loose in order to work and you must be careful in handling or all heck beaks loose. What am I missing here?
If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000

I guess you could say that you made this item to hold cards. Still seems a bit odd, and looks like a prop (which it is).
Im sure that people are fooled by it, its just when I think of a Mentalist, I don't envision Max Maven or Uri Geller using this item. My opinion only and I respect yours as well. |

Ordered mine from Barry's. I can't wait to start performing it!
Yes, it is a prop ... big whoop
