I sat on and broke my old silk to egg, so had to make a new one. This is how I did it.
Made a small hole with a drill bit in the side of the egg, enlarged it slightly with tweezers and then removed contents with a syringe. Nibbled away at the shell with the tweezers until the hole was about 10mm diameter. Dried the egg, and then filled it with salt. This seemed to dry out the membrane. After 24 hours removed the salt and after rinsing was able to get the membrane out. Dried it again. Filled the inner edge of the hole with black epoxy putty. This strengthened the hole and also produced an inner rim for the next stage. Filled the egg with about 2ml of 2 part casting resin with black pigment added. Sloshed it around while it set - the epoxy rim stopped it coming out. Repeated the last step. One the resin was hard, gradually sanded the hole to the size I wanted. The shell didn't crack. I think I could probably have drilled it to the size I wanted with a forstner bit but I didn't dare.

Yes!
The "early" "eggs" were made of celluloid (plastic) that was slightly translucent. I used, of course a RED silk (what else? -- hee hee) I stopped to see Harold Sterling at his magic shop in Detroit, and he showed me a "new" egg, "complete" with hole!) It was a real egg, that "someone" had emptied, and done something "to it", along the lines of what you have done. I bought a handful! That was almost 60 years ago, and, I'm now using the last one! (They DO last!) Dan Ford was making them a few years ago (maybe, he still does). I know Bob Sanders has a ceramic model that is excellent. I hope too many magicians don't realize how great the "Sucker Egg" is! --I'm not telling anyone! hee hee P.S.::: "rj"! Why did you sit on your egg? Everyone "knows" that you can't hatch a hollow egg!!! (But, I imagine that you've learned that already!!)
