I know it takes a lot table space so I was wondering if any of you guys use it and what routine you use?

It doesn't take a lot of table space...and I do it all the time... I set it up almost always for kids or ..smart aleks... for kids I let the four year old wih easily every time and the teenager never.. or in adult cases the younger gal to the older guy who only wants to catch me... My inspiration has been from john Murray 30 years ago who had a shop in town here in GReenville, SC
basically after showing the young kid how it is played and making it easy for him .... I hold out on the "mark" as much as I can... best move is to put his finger on the shell and move it out from under him... I do a Murray move putting two shells forward and not touching the third shell now closest to me and as they grab for the farther more obvious shells I show it is under the third... I end by covering the peed shell with an awaiting shot glass and have them put and on it showing the others empty over and over.. and yet it is gone under the glass.. but now under both under the other shells and then finally under the glass.. with this confusion I come in for a landing showing the shells all empty and the pea under the naked glass now a bit near me and the table edge. I put the pea back in the pea can and as an after thought decide to give them a pea for their help but alas nothing comes out... I end there... with a "perfect pea" you can almost do this anywhere and on any surface. this is the way I have done it for more than 30 years and to this day.. most successfully. you are welcome to ask for help privately if need be. It sure is a strong piece for me Marty |

Marty do you use Whit (Pop) Hyden's perfect pea? I have that one and a set of shells from Whit that are really nicely made.

I also do the shell game, and it doesn't take much space. I have quit letting people guess, and just put a token where the pea "should be" It also gives me an "out" if I ever need one with Bob Sheets stacked. Bob Sheets and Glenn Morphew have the best resource with their Shells Boot Camp.

So far I only have a really cheap set that I got a long time ago and a set of the La Maggoire shells that I perform occasionally. I basically do the routine I learned from a Patrick Page video that also concludes with a shot glass. I would like to get one of Pop Haydns sets someday although I also use one of his perfect peas (they're the best)!

here's what you do ..split a few walnuts ..take some wood putty and make your own set.... for many ways that might be better than what you are using. the manufactured ones are great but the real shells are quite terrific too.. it's not hard to make. Marty |

I don't know if Pop Haydn has released it, but if he has and I wanted to learn a three shell game, I think this is brilliant. (I do believe he has a three shell released but not sure it's this routine.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWKPOXPs......&index=6 I've played around with the shells a little but have never performed it. Doc Wayne had one called King Tut's Nuts that was a pretty clever routine.
Magically yours,

On and off I have played with this in the past. But things have not progressed much. Other things took over first it was cups and balls, then rope stuff and finale 3 card Monte. How ever recently I saw Bob Sheets do his version from boot camp and he explained the teaching technique. I purchased it and have been working on it and things are slowly coming together. I have issues as you only learn the routine and not lots of moves to make your own routine. Butt he plus is you learn a routine and don't just have a stack of moves.
As for kit Bob supplies 3 bottle caps and some nice pea. I like the every day access of this and seems to be more what you would see on the street. Also her in NZ the walnut tree is not a major species over here neither is the nut. So I think people would be suspicious of such thing. Also just to add I think lots of people do perform it and it goes down well.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

Because it is so interactive... you have to learn this a bit in front of a real audience... or real people...a bit of trial and error with the timing of all but after awhile you will be able to do it forever

I also do the three shell game. The Bob Kohler routine is terrific and gets a tremendous reaction. I also perform at a restaurant and almost always use the shell game for kids. I take a different approach than Martysh and do not let the kids win. My experience is that the parents appreciate my demonstrating to the kids why they should not gamble on a con game.
Happy New Year to all. Steve |

Of course, I love the 3 shell game. There are newer type peas and shells today that have more features than other shells. The KD, KDS and the Sweet peas made by shellgame -Al, at www.3shells.com are great. He hand makes the best quality shells and peas you can find. He also has the biggest variety of shells sets and accessories.
They are much better than others in my opinion and I have just about all of them. The thing that is so cool with most of Al's shells for table hopping is they can be fully examined if need be without switching anything out and this comes in handy being so close to the spectator. Great customer service! You might want to check him out and give them a try. Have fun! I do! |

I think Bob kohler's is the very best routine to learn first.
It has built-in psychology for how to pick the right spectator, etc. The routine is solid and entertaining. It doesn't take long to learn. After that the SFS DVDs are a great addition for other ideas/moves. While looking at the SFS dvds, the Patterns booklet is tremendous. http://www.thegrifter.eu/for-magicians/p......game.php The reason the patterns book is so good is that it teaches you to do the exact same (and really nice) patterns/movements and get the pea wherever you want it, all the while, doing what appears to be the same thing every time. Do not, under any circumstance let anyone convince you to get the Penquin Jay Nozebleeda DVD. It's horrible. It also basically "tips the gaffe", taking it from a con demonstration and making a magic trick out of it, of sorts, by constantly finding the pea in the operator's pocket. The thinking magician would never find the pea in their pocket. I'll leave it to the reader to come to understand the error in allowing that to be part of any shell routine. Lastly, the Phil Cass routine is sensational but does require a lot of experience in handling spectators. I believe the Cass routine is a variation of the Supershells routine but I have not compared them as I no longer have the Supershells booklet. Bob Kohler, Bob Sheets, Whit Haydn, Phil Cass, et al will know the answer to that.

Have you seen Bob Sheets 3 shell boot camp presented by Glenn Morphew? I think that it's a great introduction to the shells and Glenn does a great job teaching. The SFS and Kohler routine are also great (with the caveat that I am no shell game expert). Charlie |

I do the Three Shell Game all the time for walk-around. Bob Kholer's Golden Shell routine is heavily based on Gary Ouellet's Supershells routines. Both are a great place to start. The School for Scoundrels also have two great videos on the subject. I tried the Boot Camp but it relies heavily on the back pinch. The only time I use the back pinch is for a few outs. Even Bob Sheets no longer uses the pinch taught in the Boot Camp. He has moved on to a more secure pinch.
This year I even got some shells that look like skulls: The Eye-Gore shells. Great for Halloween shows! |

I learned from Patrick Page's DVD and it gets good reactions. I was concerned beforehand about the table surface and different table heights at my restaurant gigs but it's never been a problem.
