And work with Pop Haydn to get his permission to use his incredible routine!
It's a thing of beauty.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Permission is not needed to build the device anymore. Instructions and performance rights are available at http://www.popsmagic.com/store/p27/Pop_H......DEO.html

@ John:
I know Nick. He is master of building any props. I am thinking more of a second hand device. Is there any one who sells his? |

I purchased instructions from Pop Haydn and built two of these, still in use and a personal favorite. If you perform this routine, do yourself (and your audiences) a favor. Go back and find the earliest videos you can find of Whit in performance, then compare this to his most recent performances. This goes for other routines of his (Comedy Linking Rings, Mongolian Pop Knot, etc.). Watch closely for how things evolved and were refined, particularly in terms of timing, pauses, filling of space, nuanced expression, etc. there are priceless lessons for the watchful performer, inviting our attention to how an effect is crafted to build and shape our spectators' perceptions, enjoyment and wonder. Thank you again, Pop. There is much to learn and re-learn, and much joy to pass along in the process.... A fun journey.

I have enjoyed posting video of Pop Haydn in process. There are huge changes in the personality and character over the last eight years. I keep trying to expand the character, so that he can perform whatever kind of magic that appeals to me. I am currently working on more mentalism and serious magic, including cold reading and a question and answer act. The cold-reading/psychometry act will be couched as a Phrenology demonstration.
The Q & A will be a crystal reading act with the Sphere of Destiny. I also want to explore a kid show act with Pop. I am having a lot of fun. I will continue to post video of the progress. |

I like Pop's routine especially where he says, he wraps the bill in a "napkin". Nice touch to say "napkin" as opposed to tissue paper or such. I think what would be funnier would be to bring out a roll of toilet paper and use the words "redneck napkin" instead of just napkin. I would bet it would be a good laugh point.

What is the ignition device, a nichrome wire?

It depends on the builder. Most use Nichrome wire for the igniter.

Does it have a 100% ignition success rate?

Does which one? There are many dozens made by many different people. My two both have a 100% success rate. I can't speak for the others. I have had some made before that failed because the batteries had run low.

It isn't my design. One of mine was made by Randy Kappe, the other by Don Stachowiak. I made the original design in 1981.

I designed the original device, and the routine. Many people have made devices for my routine that are all very different in mechanics and design. Igniting a piece of flash paper from a medium size box isn't that big a deal.

It's a really nice design however, I think it could be improved upon by being a little more Steam-punk in looks. Perhaps a little more "copper plumbing" look. A tele-transportation device sounds like an electronic product but a Steam-punk design implies a plumbing look design. Antennas like that didn't exist in the early 1900s like you use here. Rather than an antenna, perhaps a copper pipe/barrel with a glow plug inside pre-loaded with flash cotton to accelerate and propel the flash paper across the stage so it's more dramatic. Maybe a little more gun or cannon like look? It would be cool if it looked like another object and unfolded into the tele-transportation device like a transformer. I'll have to think about that a little more. Just my thoughts.
Witt, I love the contributions you have given to the magic community. Keep the ideas churning. Thank you.

I have been tinkering with some ideas on this device and discovered that coming up with a great design is harder than it looks. Here is a preliminary of what I have developed so far. Lets call it version 1.0.
DESCRIPTION: The device is a 10" x 10" x 2" metal box that has a steam-punk design with copper and brass fittings. Contained within the device are: -A 12 volt rechargeable battery -Power switch -A sound effects generator that cycles a increasingly louder repeating cycle that goes faster and faster until you fire the device -An amplifier with volume control powering a 6" speaker that projects out the back -Volume control to adjust to the performance venue -A smoke generator -Switch to activate the smoke generator -jewel lights for sequential flashing (purely visual) -An LED circuit driver for the lights under the jewel covers (purely visual) -Two vacuum tubes illuminated by hidden LEDs so they look like they glow when the device is powered up (purely visual) -Vintage volt meter that show the current battery level -Dual switch remote control to control and secondary receivers for other props -3/4" outer copper tube for the smoke -An internal 1/2" firing tube for the flash cotton / paper -A flash suppressor (purely visual) -Appropriate period labeling The device does not use an antenna but a brass and copper firing tube that contains a glow plug activated by the FIRE button. The firing tube is pre-loaded with flash cotton so when the flash paper is inserted in it like an old muzzle loader, that it will propel a flash 10' across the stage. You would first start the smoke generator so the fire ball fire through the smoke. The problems I'm seeing are that all the eye candy faces the performer, not the audience where it should be. The performer could twist the device so the front is toward the audience but I find this a little unnatural. They should be able to see all the special effects as the performer handles the device in a normal manner. Any ideas? You will notice an optional two button remote control for addition features. I was thinking it could control a solenoid making a loud click, an exploding egg, or any other secondary device to enhance the routine. What if a volunteer wore a funny hat (upside down colander) that held the lemon or egg and the remotes triggered some funny action. The capability is there if needed. I just don't have the ideas at present for it. So you have lights, sounds, smoke, and fire. What more could one ask for?

Wow! a lot of thinking going on here. I would worry that many venues would have issue with shooting a fire ball across the stage. don't think I would want the liability of it. Not to say its not an entertaining idea.

I'm thinking that an 8 channel pre-recorded voice module might be better to incorporate (rather than a sound effects generator) with separate push buttons for each pre-recorded message or sound effect such as:
- "Standby to increase flux capacitance." - "Danger, danger! Reactor overheating." - "Melt down now in progress. Evacuate the area immediately!" - (Loud gun shot) to accompany the fireball. - (Alarm) for the power build up before firing. http://www.elkproducts.com/sounds/yelp3.wav - (Alarm) when the reactor overheats. http://www.elkproducts.com/sounds/yelp1.wav - (any other type of sound effect or message to suit the performance venue. The user could also record his own sound effect for each push button. Here is a link to one such voice module with 8 channels. http://www.elkproducts.com/product-catal......e-module What do you think? Would anyone be interested in a product such as this?
