One trouble with psychic functioning is that it is not dramatic like one would think...it is normal, or disconcerting, or boring. Teach someone a psychic function and they are disappointed. No buzz. Seems like normal. No 'Instant Wizard'.
And the first thing a functioning psychic usually does is STHU and vanish into the woodwork. Lack of ego seems often a requirement for these abilities to manifest, so climbing onstage or doing 'readings' is just the opposite of what is desired. And the last thing you want is for the crowds or fans or customers, students or 'acolytes' to eat up your time and your life. As Baba Ram Dass (or someone) said regarding this...so many people attain to the psychic side, wanting the abilities promised over there. But there is no other side, there is only becoming. And it is boring. So real functioning psychics are invisible to you. They hide. They don't want to see you, know you, or jump like monkeys for your nickels. To answer the OP's question: Yes.
We dance an invisible dance to music they cannot hear.

I am an optimistic agnostic on this area. I have stated in some other posts that I think some things commonly collected under the umbrella of ESP or psychic ability make perfect sense to me, even in a rational universe. I am betting on the dark horse that the new enlightenment will be that some things that some skeptics have been sneering at will turn out to be very real. The satisfaction that skeptics will gain (or keep, I guess), however, will be that these things will turn out to be perfectly rational and consistent with a better understanding of the universe.

I believe in the mystery of our existence.
None is more powerful than other. Each one can do amazing things with their own talents and uniqueness. Mine is create psychic phenomena. I consider myself intuitive at various moments and as others, I experience some moments in my life that in a normal materialistic and pragmatical paradigm just cant be explain. Best

Amira's words on this are truly poetic.
I don't necessarily believe in "psychics" but, I certainly believe that psychic experiences happen everyday. You could use something like deja vu as an example. Though this phenomenon has a psychological explanation, it makes us feel something uniquely human, and mystical. I think that psychic "power" lies in our ability as creatures to feel and express on a higher level. That fact that we can hear a song, and be deeply and emotionally moved by it is a psychic phenomenon in it's own right. We can interpret mere noise, and pull from it words and music and meaning- as if we are alchemists turning one expression of energy into another. Are we all psychic then? Maybe not- but there is something supernatural occurring here, mentally.

Just to stir the pot.....my experience from 40 years ago.
I took a course in Silva Mind Control in 1972, when it was new. To receive their diploma you had to function in at least one psychic manner. You passed a test. It was simple. You paired up and each gave the other the name of someone only they knew. You took turns tuning in and describing that person, whom you'd never heard about before the test (A La Edgar Cayce). You had to be dead-on accurate to pass, no generalities. It worked. There were about 20 in the class and we all did it. They teach you how. I did hear a rumor that some of the classes are less focussed on the psychic side, and that it depended on who the instructer was. Luckily, mine was strongly on the ESP side. Also, in 40 years, their focus may have changed, don't know. But I do know that at one time they knew how to teach you to be reliably psychic, and did at the drop of a couple hundred bucks...

Yes, you should introduce yourself to us because we don't know you, or what experience you have etc. You might find that until you do, you might not get many answers to any posts you make. Just trying to be helpful, and welcome to the Café.

If I were psychic I would use my power to make broken watches, formerly lost in the back of the bedroom chest of drawers, start running again for a few seconds.
Or bend spoons. Anyway, actually my answer is Yes. We cannot know what we cannot know. Dark here in the cave. But repeatable under test conditions? I haven't heard of anyone consistently impressive. But there are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio...

It is a tad late, but I would like to thank jstreiff for one of the most thorough and thoughtful reflections I have read on the Café.

Hate to be the dissenter, but I don't find jstrieff's post particularly compelling. Let me just start with a single quibble, and if there's interest, we can carry the discussion further.
Daryl Bem's research has been much celebrated and lauded, but an attempt to reproduce it have failed. I have no reason to doubt Bem's sincerity or integrity, but his single result is far from established, supported or replicated. Right now it's an oddity, and it would be very premature to suggest that he has demonstrated anything about precognition. John

I didn't read all the post because I refuse to waist my time on such nonsense.I find it had to believe that in 2015 people still believe in such junk.Next thing you know and they will want to burn a woman at the stake for being a witch.
I never let my parents brainwash me when I was young so I also don't believe in god or the bible. I'm a card carrying member of the American Atheist. Penn & Tellers -bullshit- is one of my favorite shows. Don |
