I was thinking earlier (yes, I know; never a good thing) and came up with what I think might be a good way to transition from magic to mentalism, assuming your act contains both.
You've been doing straight magic for a while, and you pause and ask the spectator if he wants to know the real secret to magic. He, of course, says yes. You then proceed to tell him it's all about manipulating perception. Convincing people they see something that's not there, or that they *don't* see something that *is* there, etc. Then you talk about taking that a step further, with their permission. Going beyond mere magic and stepping into the world of the mind, so to speak. And you go into your mental effect. What do you think? Could this work? Obviously, if you don't do both magic and mentalism (or mental magic), you don't need something like this, but I'd still like to know what you think of it. |

I think it is a great idea. I think this kind of combination can add variety and flavour to an act. I also think, if handled well, it can add real emotional content.
I have a friend who does great comedy magic, he is a natural. He has this wonderful ability towards the end of an evenings entertainment, to completely change the atmosphere by changing his demeanor, being serious and performing some powerful, straight and impactful mentalism. I think the emotional change of speed and power is as important as any logical and rational connections you may offer. Good luck, Giles |
