Many of the ridiculous (asking) prices that can be found via Abe, Amazon, and other such places aren't indicative of anything. You'll often find used copies of contemporary books, available anywhere, for sale at insane prices. Means nothing.
The situation is, in fact, magnified for magic-related books, as many small bookshops have no idea how to price such books, and often assume that they are "secret", thus scarce and valuable.

Doug is absolutely correct. Considering that Hoy's Dr. Faust book - a small staple bound book - originally sold for about three bucks and I'm sure there are LOTS of copies floating around. It was hardly a "limited edition."

Dick Christian's notes on book tests. I could have gotten them for free when Dick was alive if I only asked (as I helped in a small way with his research). But that time has passed, as Dick is unfortunately no longer with us. Now the notes are not available for free or for sale. Only a lucky few have them.

Bascom Jones Magick. Available, but only at a very, very high price compared to other old publications of this nature. The few issues that I purchased on eBay were not worth a tenth of what I paid. I only hope their quality is indicative of the rest (makes me feel better about missing out)

After giving it some thought I would put Bulletproof near the top of the list. First it was a beautifully produced book and a limited edition. The material is first rate and the author highly respected. Most of all, you hardly ever see it up for sale---even if you will pay a premium it is often unavailable.

Strangely, lately I've seen two separate sellers offer the Ormond McGill 6 book set of Psychic Magic for $200-300. No bidders, naturally. I recall these uses to be somewhat expensive, but not that expensive. The original colored books were run up in price on the market, until rerelesed as Prism. |

I have been collecting books for 50 years. I have stolen some, paid a fair price for some and paid way to much for others. Develop a want list, understand the value and adopt patience. Decide what your motivation is? First editions? Or knowledge of the art? Signed? Mint condition? It's a great hobby!

I'm not bothered by rarity - but for the past two years or so, I have stopped buying anything that's new (pretty much) - and the majority of my purchases are just older pamphlets, booklets and so on...
in many ways, its a shame that I can buy lots of very good material for the price of a single dvd... fairly recently I managed to get: DE COURCY KEN THE THOUGHT STEALER WHITE JOSEPH M. MICRO-MENTAL MIRACLES THOMPSON J.G. Jr. CENTERMENTAL for £18, all first editions, all in decent quality... financially that's great for me - but at the same time, I dunno - I would expect them to be valued more...i certainly wouldn't sell them for that price...
I've asked to be banned

Buy the living legends now. It will be cheaper than after they are gone. Buy ALL the old legends, for the cost of one HOT DVD you can own the master secrets. If you don't have everything Bob Cassidy has produced you are betting against time, the modern Anemann, same for Osterlind. regards, Craig |

Buy my stuff now because you're batting against time before I'm gone?
That pretty much ruined my day... |

RCP, " If you don't have everything Bob Cassidy has produced you are betting against time," I think we know that you were complimenting Bob Cassidy's work, but it was a boneheaded way of putting it.
