I like Chicago surprise. If done right you can hand them the odd backed card to hold then show they have the second selection

Legit answer: nothing beats a simple 2 cards transpo using DL and Dup, + a group of people having their hands sandwiching the card.
Depressing? Yes; effective? Most definitely.

I do cards only as a "side love", mentalism being my main focus, but ID always leaves them flabbergasted

The card trick I do that gets the biggest reaction is Bigger Finish by Jay Sankey. They never see it coming.

It’s not too often that I feel compelled to write a review of a marketed magic effect, but after a weekend of performances with a recent addition to my act, I feel that this is the only appropriate thing to do. I rarely buy marketed magic effects, and even when I do I never perform it almost exactly as presented in the instruction manual. It’s also unlike me to put a new piece in my show with only a week’s worth of practice. It usually takes perhaps up to a few years of mulling over a piece from every angle before I feel confident enough to take out a tried and true piece from my performing repertoire and replace it with something new. My performances this past weekend were a real treat for me, and for my audiences. The positive responses I received let me know that Bill Abbott’s Five Card Box and Five Card Opener was a great investment for my act. I now have my new favorite way of opening my show. But the magic of this piece is that it’s not just an opener: it’s a theme that runs through the entire performance. It fits my personality perfectly, and elegantly sets the tone for my audience to get ready for fun show. Smiles and laughter is the best reward, and Mr. Abbott has provided the magic community with the winning piece to make it happen. Thank you!

The Ghost Card (La carte fantôme) from Bernard Bilis has very nice reactions.
I eared things like "wow, that is true magic", or "this one is the one I have prefer among all you did." The effect is : "The spectator choose a card, you put back the card and shuffle the deck. Then you try to find the card. You hesitate among 5 cards, you show them. The spectator says that his card is among those cards. You give them to the spectator between his hand. And magicaly, you take one invisible card from the 5 cards and put it in the deck, face up. The spectator count now 4 cards, and his card is not anymore in. You spread the deck, one card is face up, the one the spectator has chosen." |

Carpenter's "Mysterious" or Guastaferro's adaptation "Mr. E. Takes a Stroll." Strong, impromptu (after a couple culls) mystery card plots. Simple and direct will never go out of style.

The best reactions I get do not come from the effects...it comes from the interaction.

I sure do love Hofsinzer Numerical Problem. But it takes a good patter to kill, which is a given for a magician but not for a trickster ;-)

Of the card tricks that I am currently doing, the three that get the strongest audience reactions are:
Back in Time - Jay Sankey Anniversary Waltz - Matthew Dowden's version. Diminishing, Not Likely - Paul Gordon |
