The Ghost Card (La carte fantôme) from Bernard Bilis has very nice reactions.
I eared things like "wow, that is true magic", or "this one is the one I have prefer among all you did." The effect is : "The spectator choose a card, you put back the card and shuffle the deck. Then you try to find the card. You hesitate among 5 cards, you show them. The spectator says that his card is among those cards. You give them to the spectator between his hand. And magicaly, you take one invisible card from the 5 cards and put it in the deck, face up. The spectator count now 4 cards, and his card is not anymore in. You spread the deck, one card is face up, the one the spectator has chosen." |

Despite the fact it involves a bit of counting, I find Las Vegas Leaper get REALLY strong reactions in my restaurant sets.

Carpenter's "Mysterious" or Guastaferro's adaptation "Mr. E. Takes a Stroll." Strong, impromptu (after a couple culls) mystery card plots. Simple and direct will never go out of style.

The best reactions I get do not come from the effects...it comes from the interaction.

I sure do love Hofsinzer Numerical Problem. But it takes a good patter to kill, which is a given for a magician but not for a trickster ;-)

Of the card tricks that I am currently doing, the three that get the strongest audience reactions are:
Back in Time - Jay Sankey Anniversary Waltz - Matthew Dowden's version. Diminishing, Not Likely - Paul Gordon |

I hope Jay Leslie doesn't come across this thread as the entire premise of the OP is bound to bothers him ha ha :-D I on the other hand have found it very interesting and can vouch for the effectiveness of Workers Surprise by Paul Gordon and a good solid ring & string to impossible location.

The card effects that kill for me are:
Gimmicked: Psypher In A Flash (Sankey) Invisible Deck Double Back (Allen) Painters Nightmare (Dancey) Twisted Sisters (Bannon) Turning Blue (Harlan off R&B DVD) Twlight Angels (Harris) Rising Deck Vortex (Harlan) Torched And Restored (Braun) Silent Treatment (Allen) Ungimmicked: ACAAN (Barry version) Quick As A Wink: (Fulves) Timely Departure (Bannon) Final Verdict (Bannon) Back In Time (Sankey) Search & Destroy (Fisher) Dr. Daley's Last Trick Ambitious (pop up) These are usually the card effects that elicit the greatest reactions for me. They serve me well. |

Anyway, back to the tricks.... 2 that are guaranteed to get me really strong reactions are signed card to cardcase, and vanishing deck (leaving their card between the palms). I think they are strong because they have a really simple plot, with no fancy moves or flourishes, they are short, very direct, involve the spectators, have a personal hook, and appear to be genuinely impossible. They are perfect for me as no gimmicks, no reset and powerful. I've worked them for years so I know how to make them work and work big, but the points above are what make them successful and apply to most of the effects that I do. |

The one's I used when I first started restaurant work 40 years ago still work for me and get great reactions:
1. The Bullet trick by Garcia (Super Subtle Card Miracles) 2. Card Warp (Roy Walton) 3. Prophecy Card (Bill Simon) I used to do Card on the Ceiling, but dropped it, not because reactions, but because I felt it was a bad thing to do in the restaurant, and it destroyed a bit of the ceiling/made extra work for the staff. I've added: 4. CardToon 5. Gemini Twins (it gets up to 4 people involved) Tony |
