Dear magicians,
I've just been reading through the Fremont threads here – "Its like Miami, or Santa Monica or so many other cities limiting areas throughout the states." - "If the public is not on your side there's definitely an issue." - "Only with a united front against those who would silence the streets do we have the power to maintain our rights" Well, we're launching an app, BuSK, that will help us with our research on the social/economic impact of busking, so we can convince local authorities (and residents) to NOT to try to ban their buskers. To get people using it BuSK also shows people where you are (live busking map); who you are and how to network with you (profiles); and how they can tip you without cash (donate button, uses Stripe). 10% of your audience isn't carrying cash, 50% has less than $20 on them, and those two stats are travelling in the wrong direction fast – if you want to be busking still in 5 or 10 years, you'll need to be using some sort of cashless payments system. I'm hoping that you'll support us and use ours. Are you going to like it? Well, probably not. First, I don't think anyone's overly-excited about digital payments. Second, we don't yet have a "magic" icon, you'll have to make do with the circus tent icon (sorry!). And third, I spoke to Gazzo, and he told me nicely (I'm not joking, he literally was using nice words) that it wasn't for him. It's not for everybody. Hope you like it! All comments good and bad welcome!! It's launching on iPhone on December 4th. x Click here to view attached image.

I can maybe buy that 10% don't have cash, but 50% have less than $20? You're working for the wrong people if that's the case.
I do believe though that a cashless society may be inevitable....what will emerge as the modern world's cash though or rather the alternative to banks etc. Dartagnan |

Hi @MagicofDesperado , It's actually becoming pretty much the norm in a lot of countries. Sweden's the most cash-free country on the planet, in Britain 1 in 3 people are carrying less than £5, and 71% carry less than £20 (apologies, I meant £, not $), in 2016 Denmark's stores will be allowed to refuse cash, and although I can't find stats for the USA, why believe it'll be much different? Americans might carry more cash than Europeans, but how long will that last?

Ah, found some. 40% of Americans are carrying less than $20. That's 49% if you believe this study instead. (From over a year ago...)

Hi
I love the APP and signed up immediately. I post the site and QR code for digital payments on the front of my table and can list/announce my working location when I street perform on the APP. I will really know how it goes in the Spring when the weather lets me out on the pitch. I'm sure it will catch on over time. I equate it to the credit cards in NYC taxi cabs issue. After the initial push back by cabbies the research showed that people actually tipped more when doing everything with a credit card. I hope this will be the same. Its the future so let's get on board. Happy New Year to all!! |

I have an android right now. But I hate it and intend to get an I-Phone 5 in March. So, if it's still there then, I'll be there.

I know this thread has revived after being a year old... but "Venmo" is a great APP to use to accept tips... just put your code on your sign and some people will tip using the APP directly into your account.
I've played with this here in Vegas with decent success... however it's on hold again here to make sure the "authorities" don't have an issue with it. The police are very sensitive here to street performers accepting ANY kind of tip/payment with ANY kind of APP... initially they felt like it was something a vendor would do and not a street performer working solely on tips... we'll see how it plays out over a little time. |

Hey all, when buskers get tips through our app, they get 90%. From what remains Stripe (kinda like Venmo) takes a bit, and we get the rest.
Venmo works, but only if you're a US resident. If you're from Australia, Canada or the UK, Venmo won't help you. Next up – THE APP IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR ANDROID!! It came out a few months ago... I should have said something, sorry! And finally, the apps worked really well at the few festivals we did over the summer – Edinburgh Fringe, Toronto and Halifax. Hundreds of people downloaded them. But the profiles that have had the most success haven't been through the apps, they've just been through the website. You display your URL (i.e. busk.co/pogofred), and let your audience know you can be tipped there. Bonus: if they're going through the website, and not the app, they can also tip you by PayPal. Thanks for asking Chatterbox!

Why not use Sqaure? You can get a Square reader for free at Best Buy or other electronics stores (or buy for $9.99). You can then tie it into any account you like. They take a little over 2% transaction fees. Works on iPhone and Android . And it has brand recognition...people have seen sqaure readers in stores, so it gives credibility..

Why not use venmo? I know many people (especially millennials) use this app all the time. There is no Fee...
