I love Gene Anderson's newspaper tear but don't love replacing the gimmick. Yes it can be used over and over but I think it would be much improved if made of Tyvex.
Is there a source of Tyvex printed to look like newspaper OR can I special order this from someone. Any help appreciated (Please don't post about how this is not necessary and the traditional gimmick works fine etc etc. I'm well aware that Gene Anderson's method is great. I've already figured out how to set up the gimmick so that the gimmick is held in place without glue and can be easily slid out after the trick is done.) |

I did a quick Google search for Tyvek Newsprint and discovered that Tyvek wallets seem to be a thing, and that some are printed to look like newsprint. Perhaps scavenging the material from one of these would yield enough to make your gimmick.
Other than that, Tyvek can be printed on, but all info I found suggested a commercial printer is needed. I'm sure you could get the job done, but at what volume, I don't know. You should also find some info by searching for printed Tyvek banners. Speaking of banners, you might also want to check vinyl instead of Tyvek. It would probably be just as durable and readily available. Indoor banners are thinner material than outdoor banners too, if that helps. Unless you have already worked out a substitute, the wire inside the gimmick is likely to break before the Tyvek wears out.

I found the same Tyvek wallets before I posted here. I know people are printing Tyvek bills for extreme burn so I'll try to contact one of them.
Vinyl is a good idea too. A friend of mine covered the wire with duct tape and I really like the way it feels and acts. I still have to cover it with newspaper though and that tends to get ripped hence the tyvek idea. Thanks Michael, you are always helpful. |

If you take a black sharpie fine point pen and write small letters all over the Tyvek, it produces the camouflage effect you are looking for. You won't sit down and try to read the unreadable - all people see is a quick flash of it anyway. Let it dry for a few days, and then if it smudges, it just adds to the camouflage. You can also do the same with white duct tape.

What Jim said is great advice. The only problem is that most magicians are too focused on the details that don't matter (fingerprints on a thumbtip, for instance).
Mike, when I read the OP, I was focused on answering your question, but not solving your problem. But, when I read your comment about duct tape, and then about the paper getting ripped, I suddenly thought, "But the only time the gimmick shows is when the paper is torn into small pieces anyway." Years ago, I wanted to make a Newspaper Tear-Apart Dove Vanish. But, I could not find newsprint fabric for the gimmick to save my life. I talked to my mentor, and he explained the same thing that's happening here. After his sage advice, I used a black pen to make a couple fake "headline" words, then filled in all the spaces using a rubber stamp pad. I had a gimmick with my name and address all over it... and it worked like a charm! I later made a dove holder the same way. Still later, needed a dove holder for use with mouth coils. I took a plain red holder and sewed a few small scraps of vari-colored silk to it. Bingo! The devil is in the details, but sometimes that devil is deceiving us into focusing on the wrong details.

Thanks Jim and Mike that sounds great. I had considered it but with your encouragement I'll give it a try.
The white duct tape is bright white. I'll shop around and see if I can find something that will pass for newspaper. |

Duct tape can be colored with gray acryllic paint which is then wiped off again, leaving it smeared and vari-colored. Tyvec may also respond to the same treatment.

Consider using fabric.
https://www.etsy.com/market/newspaper_fabric You might even find something suitable in Joann Fabrics or Hobby Lobby.

Tyvek can only be silk screened with special ink to my knowledge. Dick Stoner has his Tyvek comedy routine called, "Grave Mistake" printed this way. He has a local sign company do it. Another person has a similar paper fold routine called, "Will Work for Food". You might call around and see if they could do small type as in on newspapers. I would imagine it would be possible, but a lot of work to make the stencil. Dick Stoner has to order a very large amount for them to even think of making a run.
Tyvek is great material, but if it is not kept in a certain neat folded condition, it can wrinkle and deteriorate rather quickly. |

Michael!
Yup! When I saw his school show, 40 years ago, the late Russ Charles (Zieske) opened with a d*ve production from a sheet of newspaper, Russ used a "swing load". The b*rd was wrapped in a bit of newspaper. The paper was torn in producing the load. With a scrap of white cotton cloth, which was rubber stamped, as you mentioned above, a "standard" reusable holder reduced to a few seconds, the set up. You're right! MeetMagicMike,
This company prints all sorts of graphics on Tyvek paper. https://www.dynomighty.com You can try contacting them to see if they can print newspaper pages. I got many hits on Google for printing on Tyvek with a HP inkjet printer. I never tried it but apparently others were successful. Good luck,

Let us know because, while I think the Tyvex looks like a semi-gloss plastic (like ABS, or a milk carton) I Also think the amount of time the audience sees it might not dissuade you from using it. Large photos mixed with columns would steer the eye to looking at a details in the photos as opposed to looking at the material itself. It's a proven axiom that people first interpret contrast before they consider color, but in this case a color photo that's matched to the regular newspaper would be a convincer. J

What if you encased newsprint in transparent contact paper that had a matte finish -- i.e. laminate it?

I also ready you can run tyvek envelopes through an inkjet printer (but not a laser printer as the heat will melt the tyvek and ruin the printer). You could possibly scan newsprint and just print it yourself on tyvek.

I've been saving large Tyvek envelopes which I received in the mail.
I want to scan & print $100 bills for Extreme Burn. I can't afford to carry 6 $100 bills around. I know about the legality issues. I don't want too get into that again. My problem, as I mentioned in a different post, is that my computer or scanner won't allow me to scan & save currency. I tried scanning in smaller segments and then stitching them together in Photoshop. I saved the assembled photo as a jpeg, TIFF, PSD, etc and then tried to print on Tyvek paper. I get a warning that I'm not allowed to print currency. Sorry about changing the topic, but I thought after a while maybe someone else solved this problem. You can email (in my profile) or PM me if you don't want to post this on a public forum.

I think it's a really bad idea to print your own bills. That's counterfeiting now matter how pure your intentions. If they turned out to look real you would really be opening yourself up to problems.
In all likelihood they wouldn't look quite right and you'd be better off using obviously fake million dollar bills. |

MMM,
I currently have 3 sets of Extreme Burn prepared. Ones to 5s, to $500, and to millions. Changing to fake bills is not as impressive as the real thing. When I went on vacation, I brought $100s cash with me and used it in EB until I spent the money. The reactions with non fake looking bills are much better. Like I mentioned in my post, I don't want to get into the legality of this. I'm aware of the legal issues and the problems it could cause. It's been discussed many times on the Café including excepts from various government documents and laws about counterfeiting . At this point it would just be repeating discussions that have been already been repeated. I was just wondering if anyone has a solution to my problem? You can email or PM me. Thanks!

Interesting. I had never heard of this before, but indeed some research shows that embedded in the operating system of printers and scanners is the ability to detect and thwart reproduction of currency. The level of effort it would take to get a system like that in place is huge and consequently it is unlikely that there is a simple work-around. If there was a simple workaround embedding the logic in all devices would be wasted effort.
Therefore logic dictates that the likelihood of finding a practical workaround is slim. |

I ordered some newsprint fabric from Amazon and received it a few days ago. It really looks good. I'm going to make a few gimmicks using it and let you guys know if it is worth the bother or not. The only problem with just using newspaper is it tends to get torn when retrieving the gimmick after a performance.
