Hi,
Anyone can advice what kind of mentalist tricks we can use for vent/puppetry?

Something else to think about...
ok, it might not look like classical mentalism...however, artistic vision, giving people something different and your own view of performing...good on ya if you're going to commit fully to the experience and think deeply about character development...especially as you're going to have to do it twice (for you and the dummy)... so though there's been jokes...good on you for at least trying something a bit different...why be like all the rest? if this is what is "calling you" - go for it 100%... if you're just going to whack the reveal(s) to come out of the dummy's mouth, then NO, that's not a good idea, it'll be awkward and difficult and it may not even be magic in anyway, just gimmicky... but! if you're going to work hard and develop an entire act - don't listen to anyone else, if you feel it, go for it...don't bill it as mentalism, sell the idea of a mind-reading ventriloquist... ...doing the same old **** as everyone else is nothing but stagnation...

There is actually a book, "Mental Magic With A Ventriloquist Figure" by William H. Andersen.

I think mentalism with a ventriloquist dummy would be AWESOME! It has even crossed my mind before but not something I'd personally pursue, but done well it would be really weird and entertaining. Don't assume that the inclusion of the dummy would cheapen the mystery... It might actually increase it. People take the dummy's character to be very real in the hands of a great ventriloquist. So much potential for great gags... You could be the nice guy, the dummy could be abrasive and pushy... Yeah, would love to see this.

Oh, by the way, I'd rather see it as entire act, not just one trick in a larger act... The whole act. It's essentially a way to turn a one person act into a two "person" act. And imagine what you could get away with with the dummy... Switches, hidden gimmicks, etc. Geesh, I'm kind of talking myself into this. ;-)

I'm glad you asked. Check out Spellbinder's "Mind-Reading Puppets" in The Wizards' Journal #18. Qua-Fiki performed the effects using hand puppets acting as "silent partners", but ventriloquism (or as my figure pronounces it, "ven-trickle-ism") can be used as well.

I do an act with a puppet, a crow puppet.
His name is Max Raven. We do a two person psychometry routine, with Max being blindfolded. The act concludes with a rousing game of Tic Tac Crow between Max and the audience. It runs about 8 minutes, more depending on the audience and it is fun. Tony |

Tony, sounds perfect for many crowds. I could imagine such a routine going over great at a family-friendly event. I'd love to see it.
I don't agree that mentalism can't be a little silly or even corny (though I prefer the term "whimsical") and STILL be perfectly mystifying... It's all in the way it's presented (which seems so ridiculously redundant to say) and how committed the performer is to the performance. |

I'd love to see an act like that done well. If it's distinctive and works, agents would love it, too.

Mind reading animals have a long history in show business. Just read the work of Ricky Jay on Learned Animals. This has created a long tradition of faux animals that perform mental effects. And why not?! It's highly entertaining. Over the years I've performed some shoes which involved Axtell Hands Free Puppets that performed mental pieces of school assemblies.
