So this past weekend, I was able to see the new Broadway show, The Illusionsts, Turn of the Century. This is the 3rd version of The Illusionists I've seen. I saw the original Broadway cast, in 2013, and I saw a slightly different and smaller touring version a year and a half later. Minimal spoilers ahead.
The cast of this show is....Mark Kalin, Jinger Leigh-Kalin, Rick Thomas, Dana Daniels, Justo Thaust, Jonathan Goodwin, Charlie Frye and The Clairvoyants...Thommy Ten and Amélie van Tass. Like every version of the show, they each have a moniker....like a super hero. The Immortal, The Conjuress, The Charlatan....catchy, but in this version I couldn't keep track of a few of them since there were 2 great illusionists, and 2 great comedians. The costumes, (and facial hair) are really fantastic and most of the effects DO harken back to a much earlier time. I didn't really take notes during the show, and I don't want to ruin your surprise if you go, but I will say that highlights for me were Jinger's version of the floating ball, Mark and Jinger's well known Wakeling Sawing in half, Charlie Frye doing anything....(that guy could read the phone book and I'd laugh), there is what they call a "Parlor scene" where audience members come on stage for some close up magic with most of the cast....nest of boxes, linking finger rings etc. Rick closes the show with the most beautiful levitation I've seen just shy of Copperfield flying. This illusion is being ripped off on the Vegas strip currently and Rick is none too pleased.....go see the original. I got to visit with the cast afterward and Mark told me that there is one more effect going in that was not ready yet. Anyone who saw Carnival of Wonders with Mark, Jinger and Jeff Hobson know the stunning visual that closes that show....well, evidently this week it will make it's Broadway debut this week. I'm going to attempt to go see the show again....ticket, train ride and lunch would probably run me about $200......all to see an effect that takes about 3 seconds......and looks SO cool.....totally worth it. |
